The University of Essex has a long-standing tradition in computational linguistics, celebrating 40 years since Yorick Wilks joined. Our interdisciplinary Language and Computation Group includes over 20 faculty, postdocs, and PhDs from the Department of Language and Linguistics and the Data Archive. Our research areas encompass adaptive search, anaphora resolution, Arabic NLP, constraint-based grammar, crowdsourcing, games-for-NLP, information extraction, formal semantics, neuroscience and NLP, social media, and summarization. We are involved in the EPSRC’s Doctoral Training Centre in Games and AI, as well as ESRC-funded research centers like the Centre for Big Data and Human Rights.
AI is a key research area in our School, with active groups in BCI, Games and AI, Intelligent Environments, Machine Learning, and Robotics, collaborating across departments including Law, Government, Sociology, and Psychology’s Centre for Brain Science.
