This post is an exciting opportunity for a Data Scientist or Informatician to work with electronic healthcare databases and engage in big data techniques. The post will be based within King’s Centre for Military Health Research, the leading UK centre of excellence for military health research, and the project is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) for a Secondary Data Analysis Initiative (Phase 2).
The post holder will be required to manage and process multiple large databases, utilising skills in programming and data linkage. Primary responsibilities will be to:
- Conduct data linkages and develop databases
- Extract data from the healthcare records databases
- Ensure data quality and validity
- Ensure appropriate data management procedures
The post holder will link electronic healthcare records to a large UK military cohort study and extract health data from these complex databases. This post will also offer the opportunity to contribute to health research which should directly inform policy and to work with the Department of Health.
There will be opportunity for the post holder to contribute to quantitative data analyses, write a report on the data linkage process and utility of the electronic healthcare records, and present findings to the steering group and at internal and external seminars and conferences.
Key responsibilities and objectives of the job:
- Merge datasets and manage multiple electronic databases
- Interrogate databases in response to specific questions accurately
- Extract data from electronic healthcare records and supply tailored/reduced datasets to researchers for data analysis
- Maintain clear and up to date written documentation of any forms or reports developed for users
- Automate database processes/procedures where possible
- Support team members using databases
- Write a guide to the data linkage for future users
- Ensure data security and confidentiality
Communication & Networking:
- Communicate with colleagues in order to understand data needs
- Communicate (verbally and in writing) results of data queries with clarity
- Maintain clear and up to date written documentation of any front end user tools or procedures developed
- Reporting on progress at steering group meetings for this project
- Work with colleagues in KCMHR and at the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre
Analysis and Research:
- Undertake database/data queries accurately
- Produce audit reports to ensure appropriate use of databases
- Manage research data and help produce final datasets for analysis
- Contribute to quantitative data analyses in STATA
