About the Company

We are partnering with a profitable, product-led technology scale-up operating in the enterprise software space, where data sits at the heart of how customers run their businesses. The platform processes high-volume operational and financial data, powering reporting, APIs, and AI driven features used by large professional services organisations to optimise delivery and profitability. Backed by a supportive board and private equity partner, the business is now investing heavily in its data foundations, application performance, and next generation AI capabilities. Engineering plays a central role in that strategy. Teams are working on structural change across established systems to support scale, responsiveness, and new use cases, including production AI services that have evolved for years alongside new LLM based functionality. Culture is a differentiator, with an emphasis on thoughtful growth, collaboration, and giving engineers the space to do excellent work without chaos or burnout.

The Role

We are looking for a Development Team Lead to take ownership of a newly forming team focused on data architecture, performance optimisation, and platform evolution. This is a player manager role, combining hands-on technical leadership with people development. Around 25 percent of your time will be spent line managing, with the remainder focused on shaping architecture, driving delivery, and modernising how data flows through the platform. You will work closely with product leaders, SRE leadership, architects, and principal engineers to translate company-wide scaling goals into clear, deliverable roadmap initiatives.

Who We Are Looking For

This role suits an experienced backend engineer who has either stepped into technical leadership or would like to and wants to own the data and performance core of a complex, enterprise platform. You should bring:

  • Strong experience building and operating data intensive systems in production.
  • Commercial experience with .NET and the Azure ecosystem.
  • Hands on work with SQL Server and large relational databases.
  • A track record of delivering architectural change in established codebases.
  • Experience working on reporting platforms, APIs, and analytical workloads.
  • Confidence leading technical initiatives across teams.
  • Experience breaking down large programmes into achievable phases.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Comfort challenging constructively and improving how things are done.

Non-Essentials, but Nice to Haves:

  • Search technologies such as ElasticSearch or Lucene
  • NoSQL data stores
  • Azure Cognitive Search
  • Data pipelines such as Fabric or similar platforms
  • Complex SQL views and performance tuning

What You Will Be Doing:

  • Lead a senior team focused on data platforms and application performance
  • Drive architectural improvements across reporting, APIs, LLM features, and analytics layers
  • Own technical planning for large scale data and optimisation programmes
  • Translate growth objectives into executable engineering roadmaps
  • Ensure customer facing data services remain responsive and reliable
  • Contribute to long term platform direction
  • Champion engineering standards, learning, and collaboration
  • Balance hands-on delivery with leadership responsibilities
