Job Purpose

In addition to the professional duties of a Teacher, the Subject Leader will support the implementation and quality assurance of the curriculum. You will act as a subject specialist, modelling excellence in the classroom and providing specialist expertise to colleagues. Your focus is on the consistent delivery of high standards and the tactical improvement of pupil outcomes within your specific teaching groups.

Main Duties

  • Curriculum Development & Ownership: Coordinate the implementation and sequencing of the curriculum within the subject area, ensuring a spiral of knowledge that supports pupil progress. Adapt and refine existing Schemes of Work and assessment frameworks to ensure they remain high-quality, compliant with specifications, and intellectually challenging. Maintain a high-quality bank of subject‑specific resources that align with the ‘Framework for Great Teaching’ and organise subject‑specific moderation exercises to ensure internal assessment data is a reliable reflection of pupil performance. Conduct regular work scrutinies and provide feedback to SLT regarding the impact of the curriculum within your subject area. Support the administration of exam board requirements, ensuring accuracy and compliance in line with school processes. Support the integration of school‑wide literacy and numeracy strategies through expert delivery within your own subject area. Contribute to the Departmental Improvement Plan by providing specialist feedback and leading small‑scale, classroom‑based projects.
  • Pupil Outcomes: Monitor the progress and attainment of pupils within your specific subject cohorts, identifying trends and reporting findings to SLT. Implement agreed subject‑specific intervention strategies, tracking their impact on pupil outcomes within your teaching groups. Collate evidence of curriculum impact (work samples and progress data) to support departmental reviews or external inspections. Coordinate subject‑specific clubs or “beyond the classroom” opportunities to enhance student engagement and cultural capital.
  • Staff Management: Act as a lead practitioner, providing a model of excellence in subject‑specific pedagogy for colleagues, ECTs, or non‑specialists to observe. Offer specialist expertise and professional dialogue to colleagues to help them develop their own subject knowledge and classroom delivery. Provide high‑quality, pre‑sequenced materials for colleagues to use during staff absence to ensure continuity of learning. Share subject‑specific induction materials with new staff or trainees to help them understand the subject’s resources and intent.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Lead subject‑specific events (e.g., exhibitions, performances, or competitions) to raise the profile and to promote the subject within the school. Support the options process by providing specialist advice to pupils and parents regarding the value and requirements of the subject.

Responsibilities

  • Safeguarding: Obey the Trust’s Child Protection Procedure and the document ‘Keeping Children Safe in Education: Information for all school and college staff’, and report any concerns that may arise regarding a child or young person’s welfare to the appropriate person.
  • Compliance: Comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety and security, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person.
  • Equal Opportunities: Be aware of and support difference and ensure equal opportunities for all.
  • Conduct: Maintain professional regard for the ethos, policies and practices of the school in which you teach, and meet high standards in your own attendance and punctuality. Perform any reasonable duties as requested by the headteacher.
  • Training and Development: Regularly review the effectiveness of your teaching and assessment procedures and its impact on pupils’ progress, attainment and well‑being, refining your approaches where necessary and responding to advice and feedback from colleagues. Be responsible for improving your teaching through participation in training and development opportunities identified by the school or as part of your appraisal. Proactively participate in arrangements made in accordance with the Appraisal Regulations.
