Join Us as a Portfolio Insight Lead, Help Shape the Future of Health Research!

Are you passionate about healthcare improvement and skilled at turning data into actionable insight? We’re looking for two Portfolio Insight Leads with strong knowledge of the UK health research funding landscape to help us understand and evaluate NIHR’s research portfolio.

The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) is the UK’s largest funder of health and care research. We fund and support research that improves health, drives innovation, and informs policy and practice, working in partnership with the NHS, universities, and local government to deliver real world impact.

About the External Affairs Team

The External Affairs team promotes the NIHR’s work across government, Parliament, and key stakeholders. We lead on political engagement, strategic communications, and stakeholder relations, ensuring the NIHR’s research is visible, understood, and aligned with national priorities.

About You

You bring over 10+ years of experience in clinical research, policy liaison, and research funding, underpinned by a strong biomedical science background, ideally with a PhD. You have managed funding programmes across multiple therapeutic areas and worked closely with industry, government partners, and research stakeholders to align funding strategies and deliver impact.

With deep knowledge of the UK health and care research landscape, including NIHR, NHS research systems, and data analytics you excel at translating complex data into actionable insight. You are confident engaging with senior stakeholders and advising on portfolio trends, research gaps, and strategic opportunities across sectors.

Job Overview

Maintain oversight of NIHR’s research portfolio in strategic areas aligned with:
DHSC priorities
Health and Growth Missions
NHS 10-Year Plan
Advise DHSC Science, Research & Evidence (SRE) colleagues on portfolio insights.
Liaise with key internal and external stakeholders in research sectors.

Key Responsibilities

Monitor NIHR research activity across disease/technology areas.
Collate data, information, and case studies from research programmes and infrastructure.

Policy Support :

Provide input for Parliamentary Questions, ministerial briefings, and government requests.
Deliver accurate, validated info on NIHR investments at short notice.
Coordinate with NIHR data teams and Business Intelligence Centre for portfolio analyses.
Identify research gaps and opportunities across the portfolio.

Impact & Funding :

Support NIHR Impact Programmes by contributing evidence and impact products.
Work with NIHR funding teams to align funding streams and enhance outcomes.

Stakeholder Engagement :

Liaise with research funders, charities, and industry to align and coordinate funding.
Represent NIHR in external meetings in relevant research areas.

Advice & Special Projects :

Offer timely, accurate advice to DHSC SRE.
Lead or contribute to ad hoc projects in key research domains.

Organisational Relationships:

Collaborate closely with:
Teams across NIHR Coordinating Centre
DHSC SRE Directorate (as part of an extended team)
Degree in biomedical science (or equivalent relevant expertise)
Experience in a research funding or policy organisation
Strong knowledge of the UK health and care research landscape
Understanding of NHS clinical research and NIHR’s role
Postgraduate qualification in a relevant field
Experience working with the NIHR

Compensation, Benefits & Working Arrangements:

Salary: £58,000+ per year
Location: Victoria, London / Hybrid working model
Contract Type: Full Time, Permanent

Please note: This is an office based hybrid position, with a mandatory requirement to attend our offices in Victoria, London, two days each week.
