External Affairs Manager

Join the NIHR as an External Affairs Manager, a fast paced, varied role at the heart of the UK’s health research system.

You’ll be a key part of the External Affairs team, connecting NIHR with its many partners and stakeholders. This is a dynamic, people focused role where no two days are the same. We’re looking for someone organised, adaptable, and intellectually curious, someone who thrives in a high energy environment.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Streamlining information-sharing across the organisation
  • Responding to urgent government requests

Key Accountabilities

As External Affairs Manager, you will:

  • Drive stakeholder engagement by mapping key relationships, tracking interactions, and sharing insights across NIHR.
  • Gather intelligence on stakeholders to guide strategic decisions and improve engagement efforts.
  • Build strong partnerships with policy, communications, and engagement teams across NIHR and partner organisations.
  • Create clear, data informed briefings for senior leaders and government officials to support external interactions.
  • Produce high impact content, from reports to web articles, that connects with diverse audiences.
  • Contribute to the UK-wide Clinical Research Delivery (UKCRD) programme’s communications and engagement work.
  • Stay informed on developments in research, policy, and the wider landscape; flag emerging risks and opportunities through proactive horizon scanning.
  • Lead or support project planning and delivery as needed.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience

  • Degree qualified or with equivalent experience in stakeholder engagement, policy, communications, or a related field.
  • Proven ability to build effective stakeholder relationships and facilitate consensus among diverse groups.
  • Highly organised, with strong project management skills and the ability to prioritise in fast paced, deadline driven environments.
  • Skilled in identifying and managing risks, issues, and changes, with a proactive approach to escalation and resolution.
  • Experienced in analysing and synthesising data, delivering clear, accurate reports and briefings.
  • Strong written communication skills, with the ability to translate complex information into clear, engaging content for various platforms, including news, web, and digital media.
  • Strong copywriting and editing skills, ideally in health, medical, or scientific fields, with excellent grammar and attention to detail.
  • Understanding of clinical research in both academic and commercial settings.
  • Strong analytical skills to inform and guide engagement strategies.
  • Familiarity with the health, public health, and/or social care research landscape.
  • Experience collaborating with government, life sciences, or charitable organisations.
  • Proficient in web content management systems and email marketing tools.
  • Skilled in Google Workspace and Microsoft Office applications.

Please note: This is an office based hybrid position, with a mandatory requirement to attend our office in Victoria, London, one day each week.
