This is an established, Gateshead-based, product-led technology business operating in the digital consumer space, with a mobile platform already in market and a rapidly growing user base. The organisation is currently undergoing a significant transformation across its technology function, moving away from legacy, outsourced systems toward a modern, cloud-based architecture. This includes an ongoing migration to AWS and a broader effort to rebuild backend services for scalability, reliability, and performance.

Historically, the platform has been constrained by technical debt, inconsistent engineering standards, and delivery challenges. A renewed leadership focus is now in place to:

  • Modernise backend architecture and infrastructure
  • Improve engineering quality and development practices
  • Increase delivery predictability and output
  • Build a stronger, more experienced in-house engineering team

The business operates at pace, with evolving priorities and a strong emphasis on ownership, accountability, and continuous improvement. This role is based in Gateshead, with an expectation of regular time in the office to support collaboration, alignment, and team cohesion.

The Senior Backend Engineer will take technical ownership of key backend platform domains, playing a hands-on role in building and evolving services while setting engineering standards and improving overall quality. This is a senior, high-impact individual contributor role with technical leadership responsibilities, ideal for someone who thrives in a scaling environment and enjoys balancing delivery with long-term system design.

Key Responsibilities

  • Backend Architecture & Development
    • Own the design and evolution of backend services, including architecture, coding standards, and system design
    • Build and maintain production-grade services using modern backend technologies (e.g. Go, TypeScript)
    • Deliver systems that are scalable, reliable, and performant, supporting growing user demand
    • Make sound architectural decisions, balancing speed of delivery with long-term maintainability
  • Cloud & Platform Engineering
    • Develop and operate services within a cloud-native environment (AWS), including compute, containerisation, and database layers
    • Contribute to the evolution of the platform architecture as part of ongoing modernisation efforts
    • Ensure systems are designed with observability, resilience, and operational efficiency in mind
  • Engineering Quality & Standards
    • Drive high standards through code reviews, testing practices, and engineering discipline
    • Contribute to improving development practices, tooling, and ways of working
    • Identify and address technical debt, promoting continuous improvement across the platform
  • Technical Leadership & Mentorship
    • Act as a technical authority within the team, raising the bar for backend engineering
    • Mentor and coach engineers, supporting their technical development and career growth
    • Share knowledge and contribute to building a high-performing engineering culture
  • Collaboration & Delivery
    • Work closely with product, engineering leadership, and other teams to align on priorities and standards
    • Contribute to delivering high-impact features while maintaining technical integrity of systems
    • Support a delivery environment focused on clear ownership, reduced fragmentation, and improved output

This role requires an experienced backend engineer with strong technical depth and a leadership mindset, capable of operating effectively in a fast-paced, evolving environment.

Experience & Technical Skills

  • Strong experience building and operating backend services at scale, ideally in Go or similar languages
  • Experience with TypeScript/Node.js or equivalent backend environments
  • Deep familiarity with AWS and cloud-native architectures (e.g. Lambda, containers, managed databases)
  • Strong understanding of:
    • System design and distributed systems
    • Database design and performance optimisation
    • API design and service architecture
  • Experience working in product-led, agile environments is beneficial

Technical Leadership

  • Proven ability to set technical direction and standards within a team
  • Experience mentoring engineers and raising overall team capability
  • Comfortable owning complex technical problems from design through to production

Mindset & Behaviour

  • Strong sense of ownership and accountability
  • Pragmatic approach to balancing technical excellence with delivery pace
  • Comfortable operating in an environment with changing priorities and evolving requirements
  • Motivated to improve systems, processes, and team performance

Communication & Collaboration

  • Strong communication skills across technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Ability to explain technical decisions clearly and influence outcomes
