We are recruiting an experienced and proactive Assistant Facilities Manager to join a large education organisation, supporting the safe and effective operation of its buildings and grounds. Initially offered on a 12-week basis, this position has a strong prospect of leading to a permanent role for the right candidate. It would suit someone with practical facilities, maintenance or premises experience who is comfortable supervising others, responding to operational issues and working across a varied workload.
The Role:
Reporting to the Facilities Manager, you will help ensure that the organisation’s sites remain clean, safe, secure and fully compliant with relevant statutory requirements.
Key responsibilities:
- Supporting the coordination of building and grounds maintenance
- Arranging repairs and supervising external contractors
- Completing minor maintenance tasks, where trained and competent, including basic painting, plumbing and joinery
- Identifying and reporting defects that could affect security, safeguarding or health and safety
- Supervising cleaning staff, allocating work and monitoring standards
- Undertaking routine building inspections and compliance checks
- Maintaining accurate health and safety records
- Supporting fire safety, emergency lighting, alarm, water temperature and first aid equipment checks
- Coordinating the movement of furniture, equipment and deliveries
- Setting up facilities for meetings, events and community use
- Supporting the daily opening, closing and security of buildings
- Acting as a key holder and responding to emergency callouts when required
- Allocating duties to designated employees and monitoring performance
- Responding calmly and appropriately to urgent operational issues
About you:
The successful candidate will be practical, organised and comfortable taking responsibility for the day-to-day coordination of facilities activity. You will need to manage competing demands effectively, adapt to changing priorities and resolve issues in a calm and methodical way. Ideally, you will have:
- Previous experience supervising members of staff
- Experience undertaking building inspections
- Practical experience completing minor repairs and maintenance
- Strong knowledge of health, safety and security procedures
- Experience within education, facilities, estates or premises management
- Knowledge of cleaning operations, heating, ventilation or plumbing systems
- Confidence working with contractors and a range of internal stakeholders
- IOSH Managing Safely or an equivalent qualification, although this is desirable rather than essential
- A first aid qualification or willingness to undertake the relevant training
- A full, clean UK driving licence with D1 entitlement
- The ability to travel between sites when required
Due to the nature of the environment, the successful candidate will be required to complete the relevant pre-employment checks, including an Enhanced DBS with Children’s Barred List check, satisfactory references, right-to-work verification and medical clearance.
If you have practical facilities or premises experience and are looking for an initial 12-week opportunity with the potential to secure a permanent position, we would be delighted to hear from you.
