I’m working with a small, ambitious civic tech organisation that’s spinning out to become independent. They’ve built a platform used by government departments, local councils and public institutions to engage citizens on the issues that matter — think climate, public health, how AI gets governed.
This isn’t a role for someone who wants to maintain a quiet backlog. It’s for someone who wants to own something real.
What you’ll be doing
You’ll be the most senior technical person on a close‑knit team of six. You’ll own the product roadmap, shape the architecture, and help define what the platform becomes next — including leading a re‑architecting project that’s already in motion. About 3 to 3.5 days a week you’ll be writing code. The rest of the time you’ll be leading, planning, reviewing, and occasionally representing the product to clients.
You’ll line‑manage one developer and work closely with researchers and delivery leads to translate client briefs into builds.
The stack
TypeScript is your primary language — backend and frontend. The infrastructure runs on AWS serverless. The front‑end is React. There’s some legacy C# in the back‑end which you won’t need to know — and which may get replaced over time. Strong cloud and back‑end skills matter most here.
What we’re looking for
You’re a strong TypeScript and AWS back‑end developer with 5+ years of full‑stack experience. You’ve come from a larger organisation or agency — you know what good looks like and you’re ready to bring that into a smaller, more purposeful environment. You’re comfortable being the most senior technical voice in the room, and you can talk about a product commercially as well as technically. You’ve managed or mentored developers before, even informally. And you genuinely care about the work — this is civic tech, and the mission matters.
Why this one’s interesting
The organisation is transitioning to independence over the next couple of years. As that happens, the right person in this role grows naturally into a CTO position. We’re not promising that on day one — but we are looking for someone with that potential.
The practicalities
SE1, London. Two fixed days in the office — Monday and Wednesday. Permanent. Right to work in the UK required. Up to three months notice is fine — they’ll wait for the right person.
