Looking to combine your graphic design skills with hands-on art direction? We’re seeking an Art Director who can operate in both worlds—guiding photoshoots from pre-production through on-set direction, contributing to video concepting, and delivering high-quality design work across digital and print. In this role, you will develop marketing campaigns, collaborating with stakeholders across the organization to ensure our brand is consistently represented at a high level across all platforms. You’ll play a role in both the strategic ideation and the execution of high-impact marketing assets from online to in-store. If you’re passionate about food —from talking about it, to photographing it, to selling it with fun and beautiful work, we’d love to hear from you.
While this position resides at Whole Foods Market headquarters, the job is dedicated to Amazon Fresh grocery stores. Both brands operate under the Amazon parent company and share a centralized creative team at Whole Foods Market. As the Art Director, your main focus will be on Amazon Fresh, though occasional cross-brand collaboration may occur. You will report to the Art Direction Creative Director, and work alongside Art Directors, Designers, and Writers. We are a people-first company, and big egos don’t work out here. We thrive on collaboration and have a laid-back, hard-working culture that values self-responsibility and earning trust. We’re a supportive, positive, eclectic group of creative misfits. The right candidate for this role will not just fit into our culture, but add to it. This role is based in Austin, Texas with an expectation of being in office five days a week.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the art direction for seasonal campaigns, overseeing creative processes from concept to final production across digital, print, and social media platforms.
- Organize and manage pre-production for photoshoots, working directly with photographers, stylists, and creative talent to ensure successful outcomes.
- Oversee on-set photography, both virtually and in-person, ensuring visual consistency and creative integrity during photoshoots.
- Create high-quality graphic design assets, including website banners, emails, social media graphics, print ads, store signage, and other brand materials.
- Storyboard and develop video concepts, collaborating with motion designers and video editors to translate creative ideas into compelling video content.
- Maintain and evolve the brand’s visual identity, ensuring all materials adhere to brand guidelines while finding new ways to push the creative boundaries.
- Work from creative briefs to translate concepts into clear and compelling visuals.
- Participate in creative reviews, incorporating input from internal Creative Directors and external stakeholders and iterating on designs.
Hard Skills:
- 1-5 years of experience in art direction and graphic design.
- Expertise in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign).
- Proficiency in Figma.
- Experience with, or desire to learn, managing photoshoots, pre-production decks, on-set experience, and creative project workflows.
- Experience in storyboarding and developing video concepts (or interest in learning).
- Strong understanding of typography, color theory, and composition across various media.
- Knowledge of brand guidelines and how to apply them to marketing materials.
- Experience with Motion (e.g., After Effects) is a big plus but not required.
Soft Skills:
- Organization: Ensures that all components—from inputs, timelines, and logistics to the fine design and production details—are cohesive, clearly communicated, and meticulously executed for smooth project flow.
- Time management and dependability: Independently manages and prioritises multiple projects with tight deadlines while consistently showing up for key events, such as photoshoots and production days, ensuring reliability and timely delivery.
- Collaboration and communication: Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively across teams and stakeholders, resolving conflicts professionally and maintaining a positive team dynamic with openness and humility.
- Adaptability: Willingness to pivot and iterate on designs based on feedback and embraces evolving project needs.
- Actively seeks continuous improvement, seeking ways to elevate their work, teach others, and develop new creative approaches.
Note on experience: We believe in ideas above all else. Our best work happens when we solve customer problems with big, creative thinking. Since great ideas drive our success, we’re flexible on the execution. If you have exceptional design talent but are still developing your art direction skills—or vice versa—we’re happy to provide training and support to help you grow and bring those ideas to life.
