A Vacancy at NICE - The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence. NICE is updating section 1.11 of its guideline on venous thromboembolism in over 16s: reducing the risk of hospital-acquired deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism (NG89). This section deals with VTE prophylaxis in orthopaedic surgery.

Committee membership will cover the following specialties:

  • Orthopaedic Surgeons (with expertise in total hip or total knee replacement or experience of management of fragility fractures of the pelvis, hip or proximal femur)
  • Consultant Anaesthetist
  • Consultant Haematologist
  • Orthogeriatrician
  • Hospital Pharmacist
  • VTE Prevention Lead Nurse
  • General Practitioner
  • Community Nurse – experience supervising or delivering longer term prophylaxis
  • Physiotherapist

Reimbursement and Benefits: Committee members are unpaid but will receive reasonable out-of-pocket expenses, including travel and accommodation. NICE will reimburse locum backfill for members working in NHS general practice, and members on Agenda for Change or equivalent contracts. Additional support such as carers or support workers may be reimbursed in line with NICE non‑staff reimbursement policy.

Time commitment: Attend two pre‑consultation and one post‑consultation meetings during development, with further meetings as needed. Participate in committee documents review, consultation documents, and consultation documents. Attend annual away day, occasional training, and virtual meetings; some meetings may occur in person. Prepare for meetings by reading substantive papers and gathering additional information.

Membership term: The committee membership will last the duration of the guideline update, eligible for renewal. Subsequent terms may be up to 3 years, with a maximum of 10 years by mutual agreement.

Conflict of interest: All applicants must read NICE's conflict of interest policy and declare interests as required.

Responsibilities: Regularly attend committee meetings, the annual away day, and occasional training. Contribute to deliberations from specialist knowledge. Apply own experience and judgement to topics, acting as independent contributor. Work with committee members and NICE staff to identify key issues, review evidence, formulate recommendations, and comment on guidance drafts. Agree final recommendations and guidance. Advise on implementation issues. Ensure guidance considers equalities legislation and follow decision-making procedures. Abide by NICE's code of conduct, declarations of interest, and operational procedures. Prepare for meetings by reading substantive papers and gathering additional information. Participate in review of committee functioning and accept changes. Participate in induction and periodic training.

Committee Member Agreement: Set aside time to attend meetings and use knowledge to inform guidance development. Raise concerns about process or details, resolve with support from developers or project team. Contribute positively to work of the committee and development of guidance.
