This is one of the most influential scientific leadership roles in UK agri-science. You'll have full accountability for Niab's Crop Improvement Service Group, covering pre-breeding, precision breeding and emerging biotechnology across agricultural and horticultural crops, at a time when the group's portfolio is growing and becoming more commercially ambitious.
You'll sit on Niab's Executive Team and on the Cropping Systems Senior Leadership Team, shaping not just your own group but Niab's wider direction. You'll set the strategy, grow the commercial portfolio, and ensure the science stays at the forefront of plant genomics and gene editing. You'll represent Niab nationally and internationally with funders including UKRI, BBSRC and Defra, and with plant breeders, seed companies and research partners across the sector.
Working closely with the Head of Operations and Head of Science, you'll turn ambition into delivery, balancing commercial growth with Niab's purpose as a not-for-profit.
About You
PhD-level qualified in plant science, genetics, genomics or a related discipline (or equivalent senior leadership experience), with a track record of growing income from research contracts, commercial services or licensing. You'll bring commercial acumen, strategic thinking, and the credibility to influence at board, funder and policy level. An MBA or equivalent is desirable, as is experience of board-level engagement and UK/EU funding mechanisms.
