Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon - Lower Limb Arthroplasty

This post is for a permanent whole time (10 Programmed Activities) Consultant specialising in Veterans hip and knee arthroplasty and trauma. There is the option of increasing the number of programmed activities should the applicant wish. One day each week is spent at RSH performing trauma duties. In addition, there is a 1:12 on-call rota. The remainder of the week is spent at RJAH fulfilling Veterans arthroplasty duties.

Main duties of the job:

• The successful candidate will be part of the existing RJAH arthroplasty department and will be expected to take an enthusiastic role in the department's overall development and activities.
• The successful candidate will need to deal with a wide variety of adult and paediatric trauma, including infections, periarticular fractures requiring frames, and the initial assessment of spinal emergencies.
• The post has a major commitment to medical education and training, including all grades of doctors from FY1 to senior specialist registrars.
• Each morning there is an MDT which starts at 08:00hrs involving orthopaedic consultants, doctors, orthogeriatricians, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and managers.
• There is a consultant led trauma list each morning, with a brief at 08:30hrs.
• Consultants are expected to be competent in all general orthopaedic trauma.
• Each morning there is an on-call fracture clinic performed by the on-call consultant, and each consultant also has their own fracture clinic which takes place weekly.

This post requires a colleague to be committed to trauma, well suited to multidisciplinary work, engaged with audit and governance, and driven to developing the trauma service.

Person Specification:

• Qualifications, formal training and professional registration: Full GMC Registration with license to practice and with no restrictions on practice; Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Trauma and Orthopaedics, via CCT or CESR (CP); Primary Medical Degree; FRCS (Tr&Orth) (or Equivalent); Current ATLS Certification.
• Experience and specialist knowledge: Currently practicing orthopaedic clinician; All round orthopaedic experience to include significant primary hip and knee; Six to Twelve-month senior level fellowship in arthroplasty surgery; Demonstration of a reasonable knowledge of knee and hip arthroplasty plus evidence of independent practice in theatres and outpatients for all levels of arthroplasty; Experience in dealing with periprosthetic fractures, revision work and endoprosthetic use; Evidence of effective involvement in a multi-disciplinary environment.
• Clinical Audit: Understanding of principles of audit (including process and outcomes and change in practice); Evidence of recent audit/service evaluation within field of practice.
• Teaching: Proven teaching skills and commitment to training junior doctors.
• Research and professional publication: Recent peer reviewed publications and presentation of papers relevant to post.
