Consultant in Gastroenterology (Inflammatory Bowel Diseases)
Our team provides specialistGastroenterology, Hepatology and Endoscopy services across our 3 hospital sites(Dewsbury District Hospital, Pinderfields General Hospital and PontefractGeneral Infirmary).
Our acute inpatient work is provided on thePinderfields site with outpatient services and endoscopy provided across all 3sites.
Our consultants rotate to provide inpatientcare on the specialist inpatient gastroenterology ward. We have aGastroenterologist of the Week model providing expert advice to the rest ofthe hospital and helping to deliver urgent endoscopy services.
Our gastroenterology team provide a 24/7 GIBleed on call service.
We provide specialist clinics for severalconditions including Hepatology, IBD, Cancer and Specialist Nutrition.
We currently provide a range of endoscopyservices including ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio Pancreatography).

Main duties of the job
The mainduties of the post include the following.
Specialist IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease) clinic (2 face toface clinics per week)
Endoscopy, with a focus on IBD diagnosis and bowel cancer surveillance(2 endoscopy sessions per week
IBD related e-consultations with primary care and helpingwith the early diagnosis pathway.
Key member of the IBD MDT (multidisciplinary team)
General Gastroenterology clinic
Contribution to the GI bleed out of hours on-call rota on a1:8 basis
Provision of inpatient care to the dedicated specialty bedbase on a 1:8 rota
Leadership roles within sub-specialty areas
Supervision of junior doctors and nursing staff
Urgent and Emergency Care duties include out-of-hours on-call;schedules will take due account of the provisions of working time regulationsand safe working.
Support from the professional and experienced secretarialteam.
Supporting Professional Activities in accordance with theTrust Framework, with at least a minimum of 1.5 SPAs included in thecore 10 PA timetable.
o Additional SPA or DCC time may becommissioned in line with the successful candidate’s skills and changingservice requirements.
o Examples may include formal teachingresponsibilities or departmental leadership roles.

Job responsibilities

Within the job plan for thisposition are up to 1.5 PA of DCC to join the team providing care for generalmedical inpatients. This is applicable for those who have dual accreditationfor Gastroenterology and General Internal Medicine (GIM).
The new department of GIM, withinthe Specialty and Integrated Medicine Clinical Service Unit, will be staffed by15 dual-accredited physicians from Group 1 specialties. These consultants willwork a consultant of the week model of care on a one-in-eight rota, providinga daily consultant ward round (4-hour duration). This new service will provideopportunities to collaborate with allied specialties, be involved in servicedevelopment and quality improvement, as well as gain leadership and management experience.
The GIM PAs will be reviewed after two years in post,with an expectation (subject to individual wishes and confirmation with yourline manager) that this activity is removed and replaced with specialty work ifdesired. We make a commitment that nolonger than 3 years will be needed to be provided in GIM, but we are hopefulthat some colleagues will continue this activity the in the long term.
