Overview

Nurse Coordinator – AMU (Acute Medical Unit) – Band 6. Permanent position with available secondments. Full time 37.5 hours per week (days and nights over a 7 day period).

Location: Aintree. Trust: Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (LUHFT) which includes Aintree University Hospital, Broadgreen Hospital and Royal Liverpool University Hospital.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the ward on a day‑to‑day basis, including planning, allocation and evaluation of work carried out by teams or individuals.
  • Lead the team on shifts to ensure safe and effective admission, transfer and discharge of patients, and maintain patient flow throughout the day.
  • Liaise with the Senior Medical Team to ensure timely review of any sick patients (within 1 hour) in accordance with departmental standards.
  • Work with junior nursing staff to support them and facilitate discharges.
  • Coordinate with the Bed Management team via the Bleep system to check bed availability.
  • Maintain an overview of all patients across AMU, Fab/Mab and AEC and monitor compliance with departmental standards.
  • Provide leadership and support to the team; complete or delegate daily quality checks (e.g., Resus trolley and CD Cupboard).
  • Attend bed meetings and communicate capacity, discharges, transfers by specialty/gender and staffing issues.

Units described

  • Acute Medical Unit (AMU) – 40 short stay beds (4 for Level 1b care); consultant-led ward rounds twice daily; max stay 14 hours.
  • Fab/Mab – 24-hour assessment area with 14 trolley spaces; stays up to 4 hours before transfer to AMU or wards.
  • Ambulatory Emergency Care Unit (AEC) – purpose-built unit with consulting and treatment rooms.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Essential: Registered Nurse with current NMC registration.
  • Essential: 2 years\’ experience in an acute ward setting.
  • Essential: Teaching and assessing qualification or equivalent.
  • Essential: Post-registration qualification in speciality.
  • Desirable: 1st level degree.

Skills and Attributes

  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to lead a team in a dynamic environment.
  • Ability to work in changing environments and provide leadership with a non‑judgmental approach.
  • Basic IT skills including email and word processing.
