Job Overview

Liverpool Clinical Laboratories is the largest provider of pathology services in the Northwest. The department of Haematology and Transfusion at the Royal site of Liverpool Clinical Laboratories runs 24 hours a day and processes more than 470,000 samples per annum. The role is a Band 3 Medical Laboratory Assistant within the Haematology and Transfusion Department, working under Agenda for Change terms and conditions with a shift pattern covering Monday to Friday and some weekend hours.

Main duties of the job

You will support day‑to‑day activities of the Haematology and Transfusion Laboratories under the direction of qualified staff, as part of the pathology team. Responsibilities include processing clinical specimens for testing, instrument maintenance, running internal QC, and reporting outliers to Biomedical Scientists. You may undertake relevant unsupervised housekeeping duties in line with departmental policy and should be able to work using your own initiative with good interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Perform relevant housekeeping duties as directed
  • Enter and retrieve confidential patient information accurately using the laboratory computer system in line with Caldicott guidelines
  • Support registered Biomedical Scientists and the pathology team as required

Person Specification

Qualifications (Essential)
Minimum of 2 GCSEs or equivalent in science subjects

  • Demonstrable NHS laboratory/office experience

Skills (Essential)

  • Good time management and organisational skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Numeracy and IT/keyboard skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team and use own initiative
