Overview

Emergency Practitioner (GP) role at NHS Highland, Emergency Department, Raigmore Hospital, Inverness. Permanent, part-time posts with minimum 21 hours per week. Salary £122,891 to £147,522 per annum pro rata. This is an opportunity to work in the capital of the Highlands in a supportive team and live in an area of outstanding natural beauty with opportunities for outdoor pursuits and a high quality of life.

The Emergency Practitioner role is a hybrid position using primary and emergency care training to deliver quality care to patients within a consultant-supported, modern Emergency Department. Raigmore Hospital is the principal Emergency Department in the Highlands, serving Inverness and the wider Highland region, including being the regional trauma unit covering over 10,000 square miles and a population of 320,000. The department handles a diverse case mix across all ages with over 40,000 attendances per annum.

Co-located beside the Emergency Department is the Primary Care Emergency Centre. Emergency Practitioners have a unified role providing emergency care for both the Emergency Department and Out of Hours Primary Care. The role increasingly focuses within the Emergency Department, with potential involvement in out-of-hours primary care provision alongside sessional GPs and nurse practitioners.

Applicants must hold the Certificate of Completion of Training for General Practitioners and be eligible for inclusion on the General Practice Primary Care performers list. Applications may be considered from those within 6 months of completion of training. Prior emergency medicine experience is expected; experience in resuscitation is desirable. Additional training will be provided where needed.

The core rota includes days, backshifts, and night shifts with weekend work. The out-of-hours commitment is recognised in the remuneration. The rota allows flexibility in working patterns; post holders can combine this role with other positions. This is an exciting opportunity offering broad clinical exposure to the full range of emergency care in a welcoming team, in a modern environment with full support facilities and excellent continuing professional development opportunities.

The department is supported by 8.6 WTE Consultants, up to 15 Emergency Practitioners, 4 Specialty Doctors, 7 GPSTs, an ACCS Trainee, clinical fellows, and advanced nurse practitioners. A recently expanded trainee rota aims to improve staffing. All EPs have access to personal and departmental development time.
