We have an exciting opportunity available in one of the UK’s most up and coming and rapidly developing Cities.
The NHS Tayside Blood Sciences Department seeks to appoint a Chemical Pathology Consultant with an interest in Cardiovascular risk management.
The successful candidate will join our team and be primarily based at Ninewells Hospital, Dundee. Blood Sciences (encompassing Biochemical Medicine, Haematology and Immunology) within NHS Tayside provides a high-quality, patient-focussed comprehensive, 24/7/365 service to adults and children of Tayside and North East Fife from 2 laboratories in Dundee and Perth that are accredited to UKAS 15189:2022 under one single number. The department also encompasses the Scottish Bowel Screening laboratory in Dundee. The Biochemical Medicine team has a further Consultant Chemical Pathologist and 2 Consultant Clinical Scientist staff and is a training centre for Specialist Registrars, Trainee Clinical Scientists and Biomedical Scientists. The post-holder will be supervisor for the departments Speciality Registrars..
Annual workload for NHS Tayside Blood Sciences Department is over 8 million test results from approximately 1 million requests. The Blood Science Department has seen extensive development and investment in recent years and continues to develop. The department is recognised internationally for a number of its areas of activity, including integrated electronic algorithmic use of diagnostic tests in multidisciplinary pathways. Facilities include state-of-the-art specialist equipment, automation and tracking systems housed in modern, air-conditioned buildings. The department has a well equipped Specialist Chemistry section, using nominal and accurate mass LC-MS instruments to deliver a wide range of endocrine, toxicology and therapeutic drug monitoring assays.
The successful candidate will be expected to participate in all aspects of the departments activities, the consultant rota for out-of-hours service, all aspects of reporting
clinical interpretative service and clinical liaison. The post holder will lead the departments input to the cardiovascular risk management clinic. The CV risk management clinic is a European Society of Hypertension (ESH) Centre of Excellence (Directory of Excellence Centres | European Society of Hypertension). The CV Risk Service is actively involved in research relating to Cardiovascular Disease. Clinicians regularly publish papers based on research and audits conducted at the CV Risk clinic in addition to being actively involved in Medical Student teaching with students often attached to the clinic for research projects.
The department has excellent links with the University of Dundee Medical School and contributes extensively to teaching across the MBChB curriculum, active research and development. The successful candidate will be expected to take over the role of Teaching Lead for Biochemical Medicine at the University of Dundee with allocated PAs for teaching as well opportunities to develop their own research and development interests and expertise. The department has an extensive publication output and has won two UNIVANTS of Healthcare Excellence awards for its work in the development of intelligent liver function testing and the use of Faecal Haemoglobin in triaging patients attending primary care with lower bowel symptoms.
NHS Tayside is supportive of continuous professional development, and all of our posts include 2 PAs for supporting professional activities (pro-rata).

Applicants should have full GMC registration and a licence to practise, and be on the specialist register or be within 6 months of the anticipated award of a CCT or CESR (CP) at the time of interview., 10th Oct 2025 If you have appropriate specialist training and experience but are not listed on the GMC Specialist Register you can be considered for a Locum Consultant post (up to 12 months) if no substantive Consultant appointment is made. Whilst in locum employment, you can apply to obtain a CESR and enter onto the Specialist Register.
