Following a service review, an exciting opportunity has arisen to join our team of Registered Healthcare Chaplains within NHS Lothian.

We have a vacancy for a full time Registered Healthcare Chaplain Senior Healthcare Chaplain (Team Leader) to be based at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary although there will be a requirement to work at acute sites across NHS Lothian.

We are looking for an individual educated to degree level or equivalent in a relevant discipline with proven experience of delivering spiritual care within a Healthcare Setting. In addition, the successful candidate will have experience of managing a team, developing and supporting professional leadership as well as teaching and group facilitation.

Ability to work across sites, work out of hours and to take part in our 24/7 on call rota is essential. Must be UK driver and car owner.

The post holders will:

Be registered with the UKBHC (www.ukbhc.org.uk) or willing to work towards registration in the first two years.

Be responsible for the day-to-day management of the Spiritual Care Team including staffing rota, recruitment, annual appraisal, PDPR, first line discipline/grievance, promoting attendance and training.

Deliver appropriate spiritual, religious and pastoral care to all patients, visitors, staff and volunteers, regardless of faith or life stance.

Develop appropriate spiritual care and staff support programmes to help staff deal with the stresses of working in a healthcare setting e.g. provide opportunities for one-to-one confidential conversations, provide Values-based Reflective Practice (VBRP).

Facilitate the provision of inclusive worship and religious expression when required.

The successful candidates will:

Be educated to degree level or equivalent in a relevant discipline, e.g. theology, religious studies, spiritual care, healthcare (nursing/allied health professions).

Have experience in delivering spiritual care (e.g. pastoral work in a faith community, chaplaincy, counselling) and of managing a team of professional staff.

Have a contemporary knowledge base of different religions and faiths and the ability to work harmoniously in an ecumenical/interfaith environment and with those from different life stance groups.

Have experience in making presentations, teaching or group facilitation.

Have a detailed knowledge of the 2023 Scottish Government publication “ Spiritual Care within Health and Social Care in Scotland: A National Framework” together with a working knowledge of CEL (2009), the Data Protection Act, the Freedom of Information Act and the NHS Lothian strategy.

Be computer literate.

Be able to demonstrate continuous professional development.
