NHS Fife Pharmacy & Medicines Directorate serves about 380,000 people with a team of around 300 pharmacy staff dedicated to high-quality care. As a Trainee Pharmacy Technician, you\’ll work across different pharmacy settings, gaining valuable experience and building a portfolio of work-based evidence.
The Pharmacy Technician qualification, called the “Diploma in Pharmacy Services,” is obtained through knowledge-based learning (PDA in Pharmacy Services SCQF level 7) via blended learning with West College Scotland or Fife College, and vocational education (SVQ in Pharmacy Service at SCQF level 8) over two years.
After successful completion, you\’ll register with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) to practice as a Pharmacy Technician. Once registered, you\’ll be eligible for technician roles in various pharmacy sectors.
Minimum qualifications include:
- National 5 grades A-C (or equivalent) in English, Mathematics, Biology, and Chemistry
- OR Modern Apprenticeship knowledge in Pharmacy at SCQF Level 7 (including Chemistry) and SQA in Pharmacy Services SCQF level 6
- IELTS 7 if English is not your first language
You must also meet the eligibility criteria for the Technical Apprenticeship Scheme as per Skills Development Scotland.
Training options include:
- Primary Care pharmacy, with rotations in GP practices and community pharmacies
- Hospital services, including dispensaries, stores, and aseptic units, with clinical team interactions
Rotations are allocated upon appointment and may change based on business needs. Some travel between settings may be required. Shortlisted applicants may be considered for either role.
Trainees are paid a percentage of the qualified pay band maximum, depending on training duration.
