Please note that this role is being advertised as fixed term until 31 October 2026. An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Medical Directorate in the East of England region as a Controlled Drugs Professional Manager. The post holder will support the Controlled Drugs Accountable Officer (CDAO), Medication Safety Officer (MSO), and the wider Pharmacy and Medicines Optimisation team.

The role involves overseeing the supervision, management, and safe use of controlled drugs across healthcare settings in the East of England, contributing to national medication safety priorities. The successful candidate will work as part of a dynamic team to deliver an effective service supporting NHS England East of England staff in fulfilling statutory functions.

Key responsibilities include leading the provision of a high-quality, well-coordinated CDAO service that meets statutory, regulatory, and NHS requirements, ensuring alignment with organizational activities. The role requires collaboration with stakeholders such as health regulators, police forces, and healthcare providers, with a focus on patient safety, compliance, and innovation.

The post holder will define current processes, facilitate discussions, advise colleagues on best practices, document agreed processes, and oversee their implementation. The NHS England board\’s top-level purpose is to lead the NHS in England to deliver high-quality services, which will guide the detailed design work and overall strategy.

Additional duties include maintaining relationships with partners, managing a portfolio of work related to concerns and incidents, private prescriber requests, applications for destruction of controlled drugs, periodic declarations, and other medicines safety actions. The role also involves providing advice to external investigators and NHS colleagues, conducting on-site compliance visits, and offering specialist advice on medicines safety, particularly in general practice and community pharmacy.
