Overview

NHS Blood and Transplant is an integral part of the NHS. Operating a network of blood centres across England and North Wales, we collect 2.5 million units of blood a year from 2 million volunteer donors. These donations are converted into safe and effective blood components, blood products and tissues for transfusion to patients. You will be joining an organisation with ambitious plans to provide cutting edge digital services and to improve our technology services. You will make accessible management information available to all our directorates by developing systems, managing the production and delivery of ad-hoc performance data, and acting as the ICT directorate’s expert resource. A team player who can also work independently, you will have excellent communication skills and a customer-oriented approach.

Base pay and working arrangements

This vacancy is not eligible for Visa Sponsorship. Please do not apply unless you have another means of establishing a right to work.

This is a hybrid role which means you will perform your duties across more than one location, currently this is predominantly home working. You will be required to attend events or travel to other bases or locations as agreed and deemed necessary. You will be assigned a contractual base location at one of NHSBT’s main centres closest to your home address. The specific base location will be confirmed after the final interview and mutually agreed upon with the line manager.

Main duties of the job

Responsibilities

  • In this role you will be creating, developing, implementing, and maintaining NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) Business Intelligence systems and data marts/data warehouses which provide access to information throughout the NHSBT. Your responsibilities will include:
  • Performing Business Intelligence research and development, ensuring best fit to the IT needs of the NHSBT requirements.
  • Developing and maintaining world-class bespoke decision support, reporting and performance measurement solutions for use in the NHSBT to assist in accomplishing specific tasks for the benefit of the business.
  • Evaluating existing Business Intelligence systems or bespoke solutions from external (3rd party) suppliers, providing expertise and advice in procurement, ensuring best fit to the NHSBT information requirements
  • Assisting the Head of Business Intelligence in formulating the Business Intelligence strategy for the NHSBT.
  • Providing training in Business Intelligence and Reporting to NHSBT staff as necessary.

You will be required to travel and spend time away from base, which will involve working irregular hours and overnight stays when required, with prior notice.

About You

Experience and Knowledge

  • Extensive knowledge and experience of the design, development, management, and maintenance of a variety information system
  • Substantial experience and knowledge of Business Intelligence development and data warehousing methodologies including Microsoft Azure SQL Server, Microsoft Azure Data Factory (ETL), Synapse, Power BI & DAX, Publisher, and Data warehousing/Data mart development.
  • Experience of data mart/data warehouse design, creation and administration.
  • Extensive experience of working with Information Technology including using Microsoft Office packages (Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
  • Knowledge of database modelling theory, communications, and messaging technology, IT best practice as stipulated by the IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL).
  • Knowledge of IT legislation such as the Data Protection Act and the Computer Misuse Act.
  • Experience of managing stakeholders and presenting complex information to a large audience.

Qualifications And Training

  • Degree in a relevant subject e.g., Computer Science plus substantial practical experience or Post Graduate Degree in Computer Science.
  • Extensive training in reporting and ETL tools and methodologies.
  • Extensive training in database technologies, including Oracle and SQL Server.
  • Demonstrates commitment to own continued professional development (CPD).

What We Offer

  • Band 7: £47,810 – £54,710 per annum + HCAS where applicable
  • NHSBT promotes flexible working opportunities where the role will allow.
  • 27 days annual leave (pro rata for part-time) plus Bank Holidays, increasing to 29 days after 5 years’ service and to 33 days after 10 years.
