Job Opportunity: Acute Medicine Consultant Join our friendly team within the Acute Medical Unit (AMU) and Department of Medicine at the state-of-the-art Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary (DGRI), opened in December 2017. Applications are welcome for both permanent and fixed-term (12 months) positions. General Medicine Consultants with a special interest in Acute Medicine are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will provide senior clinical leadership, participate in ward rounds, review incoming patients, and support junior staff and Advanced Nurse Practitioners. Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, including Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Frailty Team, and Social Work, is essential for patient care and early discharge planning. The role involves teaching Medical Students from ScotGEM and the Universities of Glasgow and Edinburgh. There is also scope to develop or maintain specialty interests such as education, point of care ultrasound, or infection control, subject to negotiation. The job plan typically includes 10 Programmed Activities (PAs), with potential for Supporting Professional Activities (SPAs) based on professional support needs. The responsibilities include: Assessing and triaging acute medical patients referred from ED or primary care. Developing investigation and management plans within standards set by the Society of Acute Medicine. Participating in the on-call rota (1 in 12, with every 6th weekend). Developing alternatives to inpatient admission with rapid diagnostic access. Collaborating with Emergency Department and ICU, aligned with Royal College guidelines. Supervising junior medical and Advanced Practitioner staff. Teaching undergraduate students clinically. Monitoring and ensuring effective clinical practice and care standards. Participating in audit and quality improvement initiatives. Managing patient care and clinical organization in AMU or HDU. Reporting critical incidents promptly.
