About the role

This role is responsible for the technical expertise of our Regional Underwriters across our High-Net-Worth products. The High Net Worth/Private client insurance market is a key market segment where NFU Mutual is looking to continue to evolve, supporting our strategy to specialise in niche markets by delivering a compelling customer proposition and experience. It is an exciting time to join as we implement a large-scale transformational change (including digital offering) programme.

As our Technical Underwriting Manager, you will be responsible for the technical expertise of our Regional Underwriters across our High Net Worth product lines (including HNW motor) and working closely with a counterpart for our core motor and personal lines products. The role holder will contribute to our underwriting strategy, being responsible for implementing this within our regional teams, whilst monitoring key account performance measures and setting technical standards.

Working collaboratively with our Head Office teams and NFU Mutual tied Agents, you will feed in market trends and analysis to enable the organisation to respond proactively whilst also providing your technical opinion on policy wordings and product development to ensure our products remain competitive. Leading a technical team of Senior Technical Underwriters, you will work with them to drive the technical capability of our Regional Underwriters to enable them to be intuitive with their approach and to maximise their contribution to business objectives.

Our teams are based across York and Bristol and so the role can be based from either of these sites depending on your location. We offer hybrid working, which will allow you to work from home up to 60% of the time.

About you

You will come from an established Personal lines, High Net Worth and/or Private Clients underwriting background with a demonstrable and in-depth understanding of the market. This will include prior experience dealing with complaints, escalations, and complex referrals relating to: Home & Motor, Reinsurance, Flood Re, Sum Insured Exposures (£5M+), Fine Art and Valuables lines of insurance – matched with knowledge of current industry developments and regulatory framework.

Technically minded with strong analytical skills, you will have the ability to interact with various stakeholders, including non-technical audiences, partnered with the credibility and confidence to really challenge and influence decisions and ways of working. As a collaborative leader, you will have a track record of coaching and mentoring others, fostering talent, and driving high performance within your team. You will combine technical expertise with commercial awareness, ensuring underwriting decisions support both business objectives, good customer outcomes and long-term success.
