About the Schemes
At NFU Mutual, our roots are firmly in farming, and we’re proud to stay true to those origins. But we’re also a business that’s growing fast in other areas – particularly commercial and high net worth – and that’s where our Sales team plays such an important role. Joining this team means you’ll not only gain valuable commercial expertise but also play a direct part in shaping our future growth.
We offer two distinct opportunities within our Insurance Sales Graduate Scheme: one based at our Head Office in Stratford-upon-Avon, and another across our regional Sales teams throughout the UK.
Our regional programmes work directly with our Agency Network – local NFU Mutual branches that are central to our success. You’ll support regional business development by contributing to strategic initiatives, helping to grow new customer pipelines, and strengthening our relationships with existing clients. Meanwhile, our Head Office scheme focuses on driving strategy and shaping the wider direction of Sales nationally.
Both routes will give you the chance to make a real impact on our future success – gaining exposure to commercial decision‑making, business development, and relationship management across one of the UK’s most trusted insurance brands.
What you can expect
In your first year, you’ll get stuck into a variety of regional projects and strategic initiatives. That could include work around pipeline development, prospecting activity, CRM improvements, and supporting regional growth strategies. Depending on your development and the direction your career takes, there may also be an opportunity to complete the necessary licensing to sell insurance products.
By your second year, you’ll continue building your business and relationship management skills, working with regional leadership teams and Agencies to support sustainable commercial growth.
Head Office Scheme
Our Head Office programme offers broad exposure across our Sales and Distribution functions through two to three placements each year. You’ll support NFU Mutual in driving strategic growth initiatives, analysing performance, and collaborating with colleagues across the UK to strengthen our distribution network. Each placement is designed to give you hands‑on experience and insight into different aspects of our business, with flexibility to explore areas that match your interests. Throughout the scheme, you’ll be supported by experienced leaders committed to your development and success.
Travel Requirements
For regional schemes, you’ll typically travel to agencies 3–4 days a week, with the rest of your time spent working from home. If you’re on the South East scheme, one of those days will be in London. Although our graduates are spread across the UK, we work hard to ensure you feel part of one team. You’ll join a national cohort, coming together regularly at Head Office for shared training and development sessions. This means you’ll build strong connections with your fellow graduates, while still working on regional projects unique to your area.
Your Future
These schemes can open doors to a wide range of roles across NFU Mutual. We’ll work with you to explore options and help you identify the path that’s right for you. You’ll strengthen your core insurance skills, work towards CII qualifications, and develop the competencies needed for a successful career. You’ll also be fully supported with a dedicated buddy, mentor, and a strong graduate network. As you near the end of the scheme, a careers coach will help guide your next steps.
It’s not all about work either. Our graduates get involved in a variety of extracurricular activities – from volunteering and organising charity or social events, to representing NFU Mutual at industry events – all in line with our ESG framework.
Application Process
If shortlisted, you’ll complete an online assessment designed to measure your potential for success, including your ability to learn and solve problems. Successful applicants will then be invited to a short video interview. The final stage is an in‑person assessment centre, where you’ll take part in a group exercise, a role‑specific exercise, and a skills‑based interview. Assessment centres will run regionally between 15th and 18th December.
Please note this vacancy may close at any time once sufficient applications have been received. Early submission of your application is therefore encouraged.
What we\’re looking for
To join this scheme, you’ll have obtained, or be working towards, a minimum degree classification of 2:1. You don’t need a degree in a particular area – we’re interested in your passion for learning, curiosity and your potential.
For our Sales schemes, we’ll also be looking out for:
- Self‑management and initiative, with the confidence to drive things forward and challenge thinking
- Teamwork and collaboration skills
- Effective time management and organisational skills
- Adaptability and resilience
- Problem solving and critical thinking skills
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
If you’re able to bring these, we can teach you the rest regardless of what degree you studied.
To be eligible for the regional schemes, you must have a full UK driving licence.
If you’ve gained industry experience or completed a placement year during your degree, that’s fantastic! But don’t worry if you haven’t – it’s not a requirement for the scheme. What we do ask for is some previous work experience where you’ve had the opportunity to interact with people.
