Nexus Europe SAS | Brown & Brown Group About Nexus Europe: Nexus Europe SAS is the French subsidiary of Nexus Underwriting Limited, a Managing General Agent (MGA) in the United Kingdom and part of the Brown & Brown Group, one of the largest insurance broking groups in the United States. You will join our European Casualty team, an established, entrepreneurial, and dynamic department who underwrite General Liability and Professional Indemnity risks across the European Union, with approximately 80% of our business originating from France. We specialise in underwriting business focused on specialist, complex, niche and emerging risks that do not fit conventional insurance models or tick boxes. We have been underwriting these risks successfully, profitably, and sustainably for more than 10 years and have achieved growth year on year. We are looking for the right person to complement our existing team — someone who combines strong technical underwriting ability with commercial judgement, curiosity, humility and a willingness to challenge conventional thinking. Our business is built around underwriting risks that are often unusual, technically complex or emerging. We believe that “there are no bad risks, only bad premiums” — and our role as underwriters is to understand the risk, identify where the potential exposures lie and determine the right terms and price. Examples of risks we underwrite include: Environmental risks Specialist rail risks Quarrying and mining risks Specialist contractors, including deep-sea divers, drilling contractors and offshore wind farm maintenance, anti-avalanche equipment testing & blasting companies to name a few Defence-related risks Organic food businesses Testing of materials destined for European embassies in high-risk countries Other specialist, niche and non-standard risks Underwrite European casualty risks, principally General Liability and Professional Indemnity, across a broad range of risk levels and sectors. Assess technically complex, unusual and key-account risks, including risks requiring referral to the underwriting team. Balance competitiveness with long-term profitability, with particular focus on maintaining a positive claims-to-premium ratio. Apply the underwriting strategies established by the Director of European Third-Party Liability while considering the specific characteristics of the French market. Policy & Contract Management: Draft and issue contractual documentation, including policies, endorsements, reinsurance treaties, distribution agreements and other related documents. Manage the full policy lifecycle, including: Claims notifications and follow-up MEDs and other policy administration Work closely with accounts, claims, compliance and other internal teams to ensure the smooth management of the portfolio. Develop and maintain strong, long-term relationships with brokers and clients throughout France and Europe. Visit brokers and clients and represent Nexus at industry events, conferences and networking opportunities across Europe. Identify new sectors, emerging risks and potential avenues for portfolio development. Develop new underwriting opportunities while maintaining a disciplined approach to risk selection and profitability. Review and update policy wordings, terms and conditions and other contractual documentation. Provide advice, training, technical support and mentoring to more junior members of the team. Ensure all underwriting activity complies with applicable French, European and UK regulations, company procedures and delegated underwriting authorities. Work collaboratively with compliance and other relevant functions to ensure the business operates within its regulatory and governance framework. We are looking to continue our significant growth into the next few years while also exploring the boundaries of the types of risks are able to successfully write. Creativity — unusual risks require imaginative solutions. Mutual support — we help one another, regardless of whether something technically falls within our job description. Professional working proficiency in both French and English. Good understanding of the Lloyd’s and London insurance markets. Experience underwriting risks within the European Union. Strong analytical and risk-assessment skills. Commercial awareness and an understanding of the relationship between risk, pricing and profitability. Experience of specialist, niche, complex or emerging risks would be highly advantageous. We are more interested in judgement, attitude, values, potential and character than in a particular academic background.
