Nexus Studios is looking for an experienced Lead Compositor to join our busy but friendly studio team and take ownership of comp across a diverse range of projects. The Lead Compositor will play a key role in establishing the final look of our films and content, overseeing a team of compositors, and ensuring seamless integration of CG, 2D, live-action (including stop motion) and VFX elements.

This role requires a strong creative eye, technical expertise, and leadership ability to deliver outstanding imagery while supporting, mentoring, and inspiring the compositing team.

Please note that this is a permanent role and you will be required to work from our studio in Shoreditch, London for a minimum of 3 days per week.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the compositing team (mostly freelance) on assigned projects, setting creative and technical standards.
  • Work closely with CG Supervisors and Directors to define and deliver the final look.
  • Oversee the integration of all visual elements, ensuring consistency, quality, and attention to detail.
  • Develop and maintain efficient workflows, templates, and best practices for the comp department.
  • Provide feedback, guidance, and mentorship to junior and mid-level compositors.
  • Troubleshoot technical issues and liaise with pipeline/technical teams to improve tools and processes.
  • Review and approve shots, ensuring delivery meets creative vision and technical requirements.
  • Stay current with emerging compositing techniques, tools, and industry trends – including AI and generative imaging.
  • Plan, attend and supervise live action shoots, ensuring that footage is of a high creative and technical standard. This may involve overseas travel.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Proven experience as a senior or lead compositor in an animation or VFX studio.
  • Expert knowledge of Nuke (and additional compositing software as required).
  • Strong understanding of color, lighting, depth, and photographic principles.
  • Experience integrating CG, matte paintings, live-action, and 2D elements.
  • Familiarity with multi-pass rendering workflows and AOVs.
  • Ability to lead, motivate, and inspire a team in a fast-paced production environment.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills across creative and technical teams.
  • Experience in shoot planning and supervision.

Ideal but not essential skills

  • Experience in animation-specific compositing challenges (stylized looks, NPR rendering, etc.).
  • Knowledge of Python or scripting for pipeline/tool development.
  • Experience working with immersive VR/AR/XR projects.
