Shift Technician – Critical Data Centre

Nexus Careers Group is recruiting an experienced Shift Technician to join the engineering team at a highly critical data centre facility in Hayes.
This is an excellent opportunity for a technically capable engineer with experience working within a critical environment, supporting the continuous operation of essential electrical, mechanical and cooling systems.
The successful candidate will work as part of a continental shift team, carrying out planned and reactive maintenance, responding to plant faults and helping to maintain maximum uptime across the facility.
The Role
You will be responsible for monitoring, maintaining and operating the site’s critical infrastructure, ensuring all plant remains safe, compliant and available.
The position will involve a mixture of routine maintenance, fault-finding, incident response, plant checks and contractor supervision.
You will work closely with the Shift Leader and wider engineering team to ensure all activity is completed in accordance with site procedures, safe systems of work and client requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Complete planned preventive and reactive maintenance across the facility.
- Monitor critical plant, alarms and building-management systems.
- Respond to equipment faults and support the restoration of critical services.
- Carry out routine checks on electrical, mechanical and cooling infrastructure.
- Support the operation of generators, UPS systems, switchgear and associated plant.
- Complete maintenance records, logbooks and detailed shift handovers.
- Assist with isolations, permits and safe systems of work.
- Supervise specialist contractors and ensure work is completed safely.
- Escalate technical defects, risks and operational issues appropriately.
- Support emergency procedures and incident-response activity.
- Candidate Requirements
- Experience working as a Shift Technician, Shift Engineer or Critical Facilities Engineer.
- Background within a data centre or another critical environment, such as banking, healthcare, defence, pharmaceutical or telecommunications.
- Electrical or mechanical engineering qualification.
- Good understanding of critical electrical and mechanical building-services systems.
- Experience with planned maintenance, reactive works and technical fault-finding.
- Familiarity with UPS systems, generators, cooling plant, BMS controls and electrical distribution.
- Confident working with permits, risk assessments and method statements.
- Able to work continental shifts covering days, nights, weekends and public holidays.
Applicants from either an electrical or mechanical background will be considered, although experience within a live critical environment is essential.
Shift Pattern
The role operates on a continental shift rota covering both days and nights.
The pattern includes weekends and public holidays where they fall within the scheduled rota, while providing regular blocks of rest days between shifts.
Package
The successful candidate will receive a basic salary of £50,000 per annum, alongside ongoing technical development and the opportunity to build a long-term career within the data centre and critical-facilities sector.
