Materials Characterisation & Formulation Scientist

We are supporting a leading pharmaceutical organisation in the search for a Materials Characterisation & Formulation Scientist to join a highly specialised team focused on drug product development, manufacturing sciences, and material change assessment activities.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced scientist with a background in pharmaceutical formulation, oral solid dosage development, and manufacturing processes to play a key role in evaluating material variability, supplier changes, and product performance using a combination of laboratory experimentation, data analysis, and predictive modelling techniques.

The Role

You will be responsible for investigating how raw materials and active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) influence drug product manufacturability, quality, and performance. Working within a multidisciplinary scientific environment, you will design and execute small-scale laboratory studies to simulate commercial manufacturing processes and provide data-driven recommendations that support product robustness and process understanding.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and execute laboratory studies to assess the impact of raw material variability on formulation and manufacturing performance.
  • Develop and utilise small-scale models that replicate commercial pharmaceutical manufacturing processes.
  • Apply data analysis and predictive modelling techniques to evaluate process robustness and product performance.
  • Investigate relationships between material attributes, process parameters, and product quality.
  • Conduct formulation and manufacturing studies involving:
  • Powder blending
  • Content uniformity
  • Wet and dry granulation
  • Powder flow and feeding characteristics
  • Tablet compression and compaction
  • Tablet sticking and manufacturing challenges
  • Film coating processes
  • Stability and robustness assessments
  • Interpret experimental results and translate findings into practical scientific recommendations.
  • Collaborate with formulation, analytical, manufacturing, and engineering teams on cross-functional projects.
  • Produce technical reports, presentations, and project updates for key stakeholders.
  • Maintain laboratory documentation in accordance with relevant procedures and quality standards.
  • Support continuous improvement and laboratory excellence initiatives.

About You

To be considered, you will ideally possess:

  • A degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Pharmaceutics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related scientific discipline.
  • Previous pharmaceutical industry experience within formulation development, process development, manufacturing science, technical services, or a related area.
  • Hands-on experience with oral solid dosage forms including tablets and capsules.
  • Strong understanding of pharmaceutical manufacturing operations such as blending, granulation, compression, and coating.
  • Experience designing experimental studies and interpreting scientific data.
  • Knowledge of material attributes and their impact on product quality and manufacturability.
  • Experience using data analysis, simulation tools, process modelling, or predictive modelling techniques would be highly advantageous.
