Remote from the UK; proximity to Manchester or London preferred (Occasional (0-4 days per month) in-person meetings (typically Manchester, London); occasional in-person client meetings. Possible opportunities for international travel.

Nexsys Analytics is a spin-out company of the University of Manchester, providing consultancy and cloud software solutions to clients in the UK and internationally. We develop and apply innovative methods and tools to assess and optimise investments and policies in water resource and multi-resource systems. This role includes technical water resource system project delivery work, project management, and business development duties. As part of this fast-growing company (currently 5 colleagues), you will have the opportunity to contribute to projects locally and globally and develop working relationships with diverse actors in industry, government, and NGOs across the water and environmental resources sector. This position is suited for a versatile, efficient, effective and driven professional with proven technical, writing and communication skills looking to help grow an innovative new environmental tech company.

PURPOSE OF THE JOB

The water resources engineer will:

  • Contribute to water resource system consultancy projects
  • Contribute to project management of consultancy projects
  • Ensure projects are delivered with excellence, on time and according to client specifications
  • Develop and manipulate specialist technical knowledge in the area of water resources infrastructure portfolio investment assessment, and model-based adaptive planning.
  • Contribute to a range of group activities, including developing and testing group software and training materials, client report writing, client relationship maintenance, project proposal writing
  • Interact proactively and positively with project clients and partners and Nexsys employees and partners.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The range of duties set out below is indicative but not prescriptive or comprehensive as the duties may evolve with Nexsys’ activities and outputs. You will be expected to show flexibility and adaptability in meeting the developing needs of a small start-up. This role includes project delivery as well as project management duties depending on the needs of the team at the time:

  • Contributing to water resource system and infrastructure assessment consultancy projects
  • Technical or project management of projects
  • Meeting project deadlines for reporting and presenting of results
  • Help maintain the company project portfolio by tracking, reporting on, and quality controlling their milestones and deliverables
  • Contributing to project reports, publications, and training material preparation
  • Identification of consultancy opportunities, bid writing and submission.
  • Some projects may require national or international travel for analysis or training; typically in short trips of a few days (e.g., 5 or less).

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Water, energy or other resources engineering and/or equivalent consultancy experience.
  • Experience of successful project management
  • Knowledge of the UK WRMP process
  • Capacity for initiative and demonstrated ability to be a self-starter with organisational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to produce high quality reports and presentations
  • Ability to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary team
  • Excellent written and spoken English

DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • MSc or PhD in water, energy or agricultural engineering or science.
  • Technical experience in water resources & environment consultancy industry
  • Advanced modelling skills and experience
  • Skills and experience in water resource system modelling including Pywr
  • Experience in hydrological modelling
