The News Editor will have extensive experience covering all aspects of U.S. news, including politics, current affairs, and culture. They will have several years of newsroom experience working at a reputable publication, including experience line managing individuals and conducting performance management.

Demonstrating a familiar ease with using the internet and other tools to gather and report on news for a digital publication, the News Editor will be well-versed in the latest trends and conversations in the American zeitgeist. They will be familiar with quickly responding to breaking news, running live blogs, and commissioning and overseeing original and exclusive reporting and interviews.

The News Editor will assist in leading Newsweek’s U.S. news coverage. They will be adept at all aspects of digital news production, including writing, editing, and publishing stories and live blogs to a high editorial standard. They will possess sound editorial judgment and a comprehensive understanding of media law. They will be agile, learning and adapting to new tools, platforms, methods, and techniques for news reporting in a fast-paced digital newsroom.

Working hours: This is a full-time role, working 5 days a week depending on the needs of the company.

Place of Work: Our office is based in London but you will have the ability to work from home anywhere in the UK.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Implement performance goals and objectives for the editorial team.
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations and provide constructive feedback.
  • Develop and implement performance improvement plans.
  • Monitor and analyse key performance indicators (KPIs) to ensure team objectives are met.
  • Collaborate with other departments to align editorial goals with overall company strategy.
  • Provide mentorship and professional development opportunities for team members.
  • Address performance issues and implement corrective actions as needed.
  • Support editorial leadership to coordinate the daily operations of the newsroom.
  • Ensure production, communications, and standards processes are followed, and stories adhere to ethical, journalistic, and house standards.
  • Support in developing and executing newsroom strategies and processes in line with Newsweek’s editorial and company objectives.
  • Ensure staff are following established 1:1 performance review procedures, including standards feedback to relevant editors and staff.
  • Conduct/organise training for staff on all tools and systems used in the newsroom.
  • Ensure production workflow tools are correctly used and up to date.
  • Support other Newsweek bureaus’ editorial operations where required.
  • Any other reasonable duties as necessary to meet the needs of the business.

Person Specification:

  • Several years of editing and reporting experience working at a reputable publication.
  • Experience managing teams of writers and conducting performance management reviews.
  • Strong US news judgment across a range of subjects.
  • Ability to produce and edit content in a fast-paced environment.
  • Organization and planning skills.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of digital tools or applications including content management systems and editing assistance software.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of common IT tools such as the Microsoft suite.
  • Ability to work flexible hours.
