Main Purpose of the Job
The main requirements of the role are supporting and maintaining the science resources and providing technical support.
Working with the Heads of Department and through efficient management of storerooms, stock levels, resources, and specialist facilities, you will help ensure a positive student experience and a safe working environment.
Responsibilities & Duties
- Practical preparation for science lessons
- Coordinate use of practical resources and facilities.
- Provide assistance and advice in meeting practical needs of the science curriculum.
- Prepare and provide resources at specified times.
- Assemble apparatus and obtain materials by local purchase.
- Give technical advice to teachers, technicians and pupils.
- Carry out risk assessments for technician activities.
- Assist in practical classes and carry out demonstrations.
- Maintain a healthy & safe working environment
- Contribute to assessment, monitoring and review of health & safety procedures.
- Keep up to date with current procedures and practices through continuing professional development.
- Provide technical advice and support on health & safety issues.
- Safely treat and dispose of used materials including hazardous substances.
- Ensure healthy & safe storage and accessibility of equipment and materials.
- Attend courses and read publications to stay current.
- Give health & safety advice to technical staff, teachers and students.
- Dispose of waste materials.
- Check fume cupboards, pressure vessels and first-aid kits and carry out other safety checks.
- Organise, store and check condition of chemicals and equipment.
- Attend department meetings (as required).
- Report concerns to senior science technician.
- Design, develop and maintain specialist resources and/or long-term projects
- Construct and modify apparatus.
- Set up and care for plant collections.
- Prepare standard solutions, purify chemicals, treat waste.
- Source, cost and suggest economic alternatives to maintain stock levels.
- Check stock and place orders.
- Consult on purchase of major equipment.
- Maintain resources and keep up-to-date stock records.
- Carry out routine and non-routine checking, cleaning, maintenance, calibration, testing and repair of equipment.
- Collect, check and return equipment to stores.
- General laboratory cleaning of bench surfaces and fixed equipment.
- Cleaning and repair of equipment.
- Ensure teaching areas, technical areas and storerooms are clean, tidy and well‑organised.
- Other Duties
- Keep basic services running in the absence of other technical staff.
- Work flexibly according to demands of the service.
- Perform additional duties as required, including working outside normal hours if reasonable.
- Apply and promote school policies and procedures.
- Attend staff development programmes to update knowledge and skills.
- Promote and safeguard the welfare of children, young persons and vulnerable adults.
- Ensure output and quality of work is of high standard and complies with current legislation/standards.
