The Impartial Reporter is seeking a Reporter to join our editorial team and help shape the next phase of our digital journalism across Fermanagh, South Tyrone and the Border counties of the Republic of Ireland, including Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal and Leitrim. This role places the successful candidate at the forefront of a new chapter in local and regional journalism, combining AI‑assisted newsroom tools with strong, traditional reporting skills to deliver trusted, high‑quality digital content to our growing audience on both sides of the Border.

Working closely with our editorial team, you will use AI technology to help generate national, regional, local and hyper‑local stories, while applying sound news judgement, originality and editorial oversight to ensure everything we publish meets the Impartial Reporter’s long‑standing standards of accuracy, fairness and public interest journalism. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who believes in the potential of AI to enhance—not replace—journalism, and who understands the importance of community‑focused reporting in rural and Border regions.

The role is proactive and creative, requiring a strong news sense, an understanding of what resonates with audiences, and the ability to think digitally across multiple platforms. As an AI‑assisted reporter, you will develop both your journalistic and technical skills, learning how to manage and deploy AI tools effectively while retaining full editorial control over story selection, angles, sourcing and presentation. Audience data and content analytics will play a key role in helping refine coverage, grow readership and better serve our communities. You will also be responsible for ensuring that all content meets the highest standards of media law, privacy, plagiarism, accuracy and ethics, using your editorial judgement alongside AI tools to safeguard trust. Full training in the use of AI systems and workflows will be provided.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with AI systems to assist in writing and producing news content, while maintaining editorial quality, authenticity and local relevance.
  • Ensure all published content complies with media law, ethical standards, privacy requirements and accuracy guidelines.
  • Proactively source and develop story ideas from a wide range of contacts, data sources and community leads across Fermanagh, South Tyrone and the Border counties.
  • Identify opportunities to expand coverage into under‑reported areas, communities and topics that matter to our readers.
  • Upload, manage and publish digital content efficiently, using AI tools to streamline workflows without compromising quality.
  • Monitor the performance of AI‑assisted content and contribute feedback to improve systems, processes and editorial outcomes.
  • Work collaboratively with editors and reporters to integrate AI‑assisted content into the wider newsroom operation.
  • Stay informed about emerging trends, best practice and ethical considerations around AI in journalism.
  • Contribute to audience growth by meeting agreed digital performance targets.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

  • NCTJ diploma or equivalent journalism qualification.
  • Excellent writing, editing and headline‑writing skills, with strong attention to detail.
  • A solid understanding of journalistic values, public interest reporting and community‑focused news.
  • Strong working knowledge of media law and the Editors’ Code of Conduct.
  • Curiosity, creativity and a willingness to experiment responsibly with new tools and approaches.
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines in a fast‑paced digital environment.
  • Confidence in analysing audience data and using insights to inform editorial decisions.

Benefits

  • 25 days holiday + bank holidays + your birthday off.
  • Holiday buy scheme for extra flexibility.
  • Structured career progression & ongoing training.
  • Pension plan & mental health support.
  • Perks & discounts including: Gym membership, Cycle to Work scheme, Eye care vouchers (£50 towards glasses), Retail discounts.
