Junior Cloud Engineer
Location: Glasgow or Edinburgh, Scotland
Level: Junior/ Mid-Level
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Junior Cloud Engineer to join an innovative technology company operating within the space sector, developing advanced computing components and software technology for next-generation satellites.
You will join an international Software Development Team working on unique Edge Computing technology, developing software that will run directly on satellite hardware.
The technology allows satellites to process and analyse data directly in orbit.
The platform is powered by advanced processing chips, the same technology used in NASA's Mars Rover missions.
This is an opportunity to work on genuinely innovative technology, contributing to the development of systems that will ultimately operate in space.
Previous experience within the space sector is not required. The team is interested in strong programmers and technically minded individuals from a range of engineering and technology backgrounds who are keen to apply their skills to an exciting new industry.
The Role
As a Cloud Engineer, you will contribute to designing and building cloud infrastructure and software systems that support the development and deployment of advanced Edge Computing technology.
This is a hands-on engineering position suited to someone who enjoys solving complex technical problems, experimenting with new approaches and understanding how systems work under the hood.
You will have the opportunity to work across different areas of the software development lifecycle, collaborating with international engineering teams and contributing to technology that will ultimately operate onboard satellites.
You'll be encouraged to explore new approaches, develop your technical capabilities and contribute to building systems rather than simply relying on pre-existing solutions and frameworks.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop and build cloud-based systems and infrastructure.
- Develop software and cloud solutions to support data processing and Edge Computing applications.
- Build and configure cloud environments using AWS, Azure or Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
- Develop and integrate software solutions that support the deployment of applications onto specialised satellite hardware.
- Explore and implement new approaches to infrastructure, automation and system development.
- Work closely with software and hardware engineers across international development teams.
- Troubleshoot complex technical challenges and contribute to continuous improvements across the software development environment.
- Collaborate with the wider Software Development Team to integrate cloud infrastructure with onboard computing technology.
What We're Looking For
- A First-Class or 2:1 undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Robotics, Mechatronics or another numerically or technically demanding discipline.
- Strong programming and software development capabilities, demonstrated through professional experience, academic projects or personal projects.
- Practical experience with at least one major cloud platform: AWS, Azure or Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
- An understanding of cloud computing principles, infrastructure and system architecture.
- An understanding of networking, operating systems and how different components of a system communicate.
- Strong analytical thinking, logical reasoning and problem-solving abilities.
- Curiosity and enthusiasm for learning new technologies and working on complex engineering problems.
Particularly interested in candidates who:
- Have a strong understanding of cloud computing principles and enjoy building, experimenting with and developing technical systems rather than simply relying on pre-built solutions.
- Have experience with personal projects, university projects, internships or professional work involving cloud environments, programming or infrastructure.
- Demonstrate an ability to understand complex systems, troubleshoot problems and develop solutions independently.
- Have an interest in systems engineering, distributed computing, automation, Edge Computing or low-level software development.
- Are naturally curious, technically ambitious and enjoy understanding how things work under the hood.
- Can demonstrate strong programming fundamentals and the ability to pick up new technologies quickly.
Additional Requirements
- Must have the existing legal right to live and work in the UK. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
- Must be willing and able to travel internationally to other company office locations when required.
- Must be eligible to obtain any necessary security clearance and successfully complete relevant background checks, where required.
Why Join?
- Work on cutting-edge technology being developed for use in satellites.
- Contribute to Edge Computing solutions that process data directly in space.
- Work with advanced hardware using processing chips also deployed in NASA's Mars Rover missions.
- Join an international engineering team with opportunities to collaborate across multiple office locations.
- Develop your technical skills across cloud, software and Edge Computing technologies.
- Gain exposure to innovative cloud infrastructure and systems development.
- Be part of a team building genuinely innovative technology from the ground up.
This is an excellent opportunity for an ambitious junior-to-mid-level engineer looking to develop their career while working on technology that is pushing the boundaries of space computing.
