We are seeking an experienced Optical Systems Engineer with deep expertise in Earth Observation (EO) satellite optics to lead the technical development of a spaceborne optical payload for our NewSpace client - a rapidly expanding space technology company based in the UK.

This is a senior, hands-on opportunity to shape and deliver high-performance optical systems for Earth Observation satellites.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead development of optical system architecture, requirements and trade studies for an EO payload
  • Perform optical design, modelling and performance analysis (image quality, MTF, stray light, tolerancing)
  • Define subsystem and component specifications; oversee manufacturing and supplier activities
  • Participate hands-on in optical integration, alignment and verification activities
  • Support environmental testing and performance validation
  • Maintain risk registers, mitigation plans, development schedules and technical inputs
  • Produce and own technical documentation including requirements traceability, verification reports and design records
  • Support technical reviews, proposals and knowledge transfer activities
  • Work closely within a multidisciplinary project team
Essential Qualifications & Experience
  • Degree in Optics, Physics or relevant Engineering discipline
  • Extensive experience in Earth Observation satellite optical systems
  • Proven end-to-end payload experience (concept through delivery)
  • Strong hands-on optical integration, alignment and test experience
  • Experience with interferometry, MTF testing and optical verification
  • Proficiency in optical design and analysis tools (e.g. Zemax/OpticStudio)
  • Experience with modelling tools (e.g. Python; mechanical/thermal modelling tools desirable)

  • Experience conducting optical trade studies and performance optimisation
  • Excellent technical documentation skills
