About the Role

The Health and Safety Manager will be responsible for leading the Health and Safety management of tenancy activity across STFC sites. This role focuses on ensuring safe operations for tenants, staff, contractors, and visitors across multi‑sector environments including biotech, energy, and space. The position requires strong leadership in Safety, Health, and Environment (SHE) systems, with responsibility for developing and reviewing tenant safety frameworks, supporting incident investigation, and delivering safety training. The successful candidate will work closely with internal facilities and SHE teams to maintain compliance and embed best practice across all operational areas.

Job Duties

  • Lead and manage the provision of effective, efficient and professional SHE services to staff, contractors, tenants, and visitors ensuring full compliance.
  • Provide professional health and safety advice and support to tenants in implementing STFC SHE management systems.
  • Develop and review tenant health and safety systems and processes in line with internal audits, external best practice, and regulatory updates.
  • Ensure all incidents including injuries, near misses, environmental events, and fires are reported, investigated, and appropriately addressed.
  • Support the delivery of health and safety training programmes for tenants and site users.
  • Attend and report to safety committee meetings and contribute to governance and oversight of SHE performance.
  • Promote continuous improvement through horizon scanning and legislative monitoring.

Job Requirements

  • Degree or HND qualification in a science or engineering discipline.
  • NEBOSH National Diploma for Occupational Health and Safety Professionals or equivalent qualification.
  • Experience delivering SHE advisory services in science, engineering, or technology environments.
  • Strong understanding of health and safety legislation and management systems.
  • Knowledge of COSHH regulations and hazardous substances management.
  • Knowledge of biological safety (BioCOSHH) and genetically modified organisms regulations.
  • Knowledge of DSEAR assessments and explosive atmosphere regulations.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills across all organisational levels.
  • Ability to work independently under pressure and manage competing priorities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in large research or scientific organisations.
  • Experience supporting multi‑site health and safety operations.
