The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is seeking an experienced Product Assurance Specialist to join its world-class team at the UK Astronomy Technology Centre (UKATC) in Edinburgh, Scotland. About Role

As a Product Assurance Specialist, you will play a critical role in ensuring that complex, high-value scientific and space engineering projects meet the highest standards of quality, safety, and compliance. You will provide expert product assurance input across the full project lifecycle, from design and development through to delivery and verification. The portfolio includes globally significant programmes such as key subsystems for the world’s first space-based gravitational wave observatory and instrumentation for the ESO Extremely Large Telescope. You will work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment that combines historic scientific heritage with modern laboratories and cleanroom facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Provide product assurance expertise throughout design and development to ensure compliance with quality standards and PA requirements
  • Contribute to and approve system requirements, verification plans, and activities, including safety, reliability, hazard, and failure analysis
  • Participate in and support project gateway reviews, including preparation, review, and follow-up actions
  • Develop, maintain, and manage Product Assurance Plans and ensure their effective application
  • Work with consortium partners, suppliers, and customers on product assurance matters, including audits and technical support
  • Ensure robust Product Data Management (PDM) and Configuration Item Data List (CIDL) control
  • Support non-conformance management, change control, and evidence of compliance processes

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in a STEM subject or equivalent professional experience
  • Eligibility for or holding relevant professional registration (e.g., CQP or equivalent)
  • Proven experience in a lead Product Assurance role within a highly regulated quality environment (e.g., ECSS, ISO 9001, or similar)
  • Strong knowledge of space or similarly regulated industry standards (ECSS, ESCC, NASA, MIL, or equivalent)
  • Experience leading technical reviews, documentation control, and compliance activities
  • Broad understanding of engineering disciplines and environmental qualification for complex systems
