Job Description
Your role:
As Product Designer - Data & Applied AI, reporting to the Head of Applied AI and Product Design, you will sit at the cutting edge of internal AI products and newsroom analytics tools. You will own the visual language and component architecture for our internal tools, including driving the design of Arc, our internal newsroom analytics tool that empowers journalists across The Sun, The Times, and talkSPORT to make better informed decisions. You will act as the crucial design bridge between AI managers (who lead discovery) and our Product Design Engineer (who brings your designs to life in code). This is an exciting opportunity to build, scale, and maintain a unified Data & AI design system in Figma while leveraging an AI-native mindset. You will take ownership of understanding complex stakeholder requirements and tackling intricate design problems, translating them into visually appealing, highly intuitive, and user‑centric experiences.
Day to day you will:
- Design intuitive, high-fidelity UI and interaction patterns for core internal tools (such as Arc) and internal AI tools based on requirements surfaced by our AI managers. Working closely with engineers to translate your designs into code.
- Build, scale, and maintain a unified Data & AI design system in Figma, defining tokens, UI patterns, and component variants alongside our Product Design Engineer. To enable rapid prototyping for internal tools.
- Provide UX/UI guidance on rapidly generated internal prototypes, ensuring they adhere to internal UI themes and usability best practices.
- Partner closely with our Product Design Engineer to translate Figma UI components seamlessly into production-ready code libraries.
- Run fast, lightweight usability testing and feedback sessions on Figma prototypes and PoCs to validate UI clarity and interaction flows with internal users.
- Create rapid visual concepts and prototypes to bring ideas to life and secure stakeholder buy‑in, while also providing survey support to gather light‑touch user sentiment during centralised business‑wide AI trials.
What we're looking for from you:
- Strong mastery of Figma, including deep practical knowledge of auto-layout, variables, design tokens, interactive components, and library management.
- Experience in building, documenting, and scaling reusable UI component libraries for shared, complex design systems.
- A strong portfolio demonstrating visual craftsmanship, creativity, and the ability to convert wireframes and workflow maps into polished, accessible, and intuitive high‑fidelity interfaces.
- Clear documentation habits and collaborative experience pairing with front‑end or Design Engineers for pixel‑perfect implementation, alongside comfort working closely with BAs and PMs in a fast‑paced environment where concepts pivot rapidly.
- Excellent communication skills to proactively keep cross‑functional stakeholders updated on progress, risks, and blockers.
- Passion for AI‑native design tools, systems thinking, and a curious mind to explore new ways of working, ideally with basic exposure to vibe coding tools or an interest in media and data visualisation.
