The Sun is looking for highly motivated, first class reporters to join The Trends Team - an exciting desk focused on high quality, referral-led content. You will build the audience of The Sun by producing engaging, topical and highly shareable content for our digital audience with an innovative and dynamic team that is capitalising on emerging trends.

Responsibilities

  • Help lead the team: Regularly help manage the team tasked with writing a wide range of engaging stories for digital across all sections including specialist content.
  • Traffic driving: Maximise traffic by targeting key areas the team can win at - the editors should be across all monitoring tools, be adept at analysis and constantly feedback to the team so they know what is working too.
  • Forensic monitoring of themes: Understand which themes are working for the website, from which referrers and why - as well as how to maximise traffic potential.
  • Produce high quality content: Write a number of engaging stories every day for the website, on a variety of different topics including lifestyle, consumer and news.
  • Variety and originality: Ability to expand themes by adapting them - finding new ways to interest readers as well as come up with new topics to drive traffic.
  • Pivot as necessary: Be nimble and swap focus from Social to Discover to the Homepage quickly. Ability to experiment with content to reach new audiences.
  • Training and feedback: The editors will be expected to train new writers and bring on more junior reporters including on story sourcing, targeting copy and editing.
  • Creativity and agility: Be on the pulse with story ideas coming from a wide variety of sources, and have the ability to pitch good ideas daily.
  • Teamwork: Work with teams across the newsroom to ensure good communication.

Qualifications

  • Willingness to learn quickly and on-the-job while helping develop a small team.
  • Strong ability to write stories quickly and under pressure, but still to a high standard.
  • Demonstrable understanding of traffic-driving, including the differences between referrers such as Discover, Facebook and the Homepage and how to target each one.
  • Adept at working with others, such as senior editors and audience managers, on story ideas.
  • Ability to balance feedback from multiple sources with your own ideas to create the best lists possible.
  • Knowledge of writing for different sections and how that impacts style (Consumer, Travel, News, Lifestyle etc).
  • Be brimming with new ideas.
  • Knowledge of lifestyle trends and how to adapt them into highly-clickable content.
  • A tireless work ethic, a positive attitude, and a desire to learn and grow.
  • The ability to work collaboratively as part of a large, integrated team.
  • Knowledge of media law and the IPSO code.
