Overview

MarketWatch is seeking an energetic and intellectually curious reporter to join our London newsroom and help shape the financial conversation for U.S. investors as the trading day kicks off. You’re the kind of journalist who cherishes making complex stories accessible–whether it’s distilling volatile earnings reports, capturing a market move in real time, or sharpening a paragraph so the lead lands just right.

You’ll jump on fast-moving developments and contribute stories with clarity, authority, and impact to the readers we serve.

One moment, you’re writing a story that moves the market; the next, you’re spotting a headline in a piece of data, or development in the markets, that others missed. You’re nimble, fluent in financial language and driven to unpack the forces moving money around, explain what matters to investors, and make complex ideas resonate with our financially curious readers as well as our money-minded traders.

This role is for a burgeoning journalist who is undaunted by the pressures of deadlines and sees their job as an obligation to deliver timely news with precision and insight for our readers. The ideal candidate has strong foundational reporting skills, a solid grasp of financial concepts, and a hunger to grow within a collaborative newsroom that knows that exceptional journalism takes a village.

While writing and reporting are central to the role, you may also occasionally assist in editing or sharpening colleagues’ work under the guidance of senior editors and copy editors. In that capacity, you’ll have a keen eye for detail and a focus for improving the quality of our day-to-day journalism.

You’ll report to MarketWatch’s London Bureau Chief and collaborate with colleagues across global time zones.

You Will

  • Cover breaking market and company news, particularly with a U.S. focus
  • Write original stories and quick-turn analysis for a broad, investor-minded audience
  • Contribute to MarketWatch’s widely read “Need to Know” premarket newsletter
  • Identify smart angles, trends, and news nuggets across the global financial landscape
  • Occasionally help polish copy from colleagues for clarity and accuracy, as needed
  • Work closely with editors and reporters in London and New York to maintain seamless coverage

You Have

  • At least 3–5 years of experience in financial, business, or economics journalism
  • Strong writing skills, with the ability to turn complex topics into clear, engaging stories
  • A solid understanding of financial markets, corporate earnings, and macroeconomic news
  • Deadline discipline and the ability to juggle multiple assignments under time pressure
  • A sharp eye for detail, accuracy, and reader relevance
  • Familiarity with publishing tools and SEO best practices
  • A collaborative mindset and an eagerness to develop within a newsroom setting
