Job Description

The deputy business editor works closely with the business editor to deliver a distinctive, agenda-setting business news package across all platforms. This job is responsible for ensuring world-class standards of digital and print journalism, and working as an integral part of the editorial team as we embrace digital-first commissioning and publishing.

Responsibilities:

  1. Successfully manage productive relationships with the business editor, the editor, deputy editor and head of news as well as other section editors.
  2. Deputise for the business editor.
  3. Work with the business editor to conceive and deliver exclusive agenda-setting business news stories, features and comment ideas for digital audiences.
  4. Pitch exclusive video, polls, interactive graphics and audio ideas to engage our digital audience and plan how these stories are shared and promoted online.
  5. Build and maintain excellent contacts.
  6. Demonstrate an understanding of what works best for digital, offering content that is truly distinctive.
  7. Have the ability to write with authority and command the respect of our readers and those within the business.
  8. Forward-plan, pitch and deliver long-range projects and investigations.
  9. Use social networking and other digital platforms for content generation and to promote Sunday Times business content.
  10. Represent The Sunday Times on radio and TV, for example, on Times Radio.
  11. Assist the business editor with people and budget management.

Skills and experience:

  1. Experience working as a business journalist for a national newspaper or website.
  2. Strong contacts in business and a proven ability to bring in exclusive stories.
  3. Experience helping to manage people and budgets.
  4. An understanding of how audience data supports pitching and commissioning and how to promote a story on social media and through search engines.
  5. Knows how to attract and retain new audiences.
  6. An ability to work under pressure, to tight deadlines and with rigorous accuracy, while juggling multiple projects.
  7. Experience of working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams.
  8. Excellent presentation skills and ability to communicate succinctly and effectively.
  9. A strong understanding of editorial compliance and regulatory issues.
