NRF is seeking a Field Carpenter to contribute to the organization’s dynamic and growing Preservation Department. This position will assist with restoration and routine repair and maintenance of NRF’s collection of over 80 18th‑ and 19th‑century houses, the majority of which are rented to residential or commercial tenant stewards. The Field Carpenter will serve as part of a larger Preservation Crew composed of five carpenters and four painters, all overseen by the Properties Care Manager.

Salary Range: $52,000- $56,160 annually ($25.00-$27.00 per hour) based on experience. Full‑time, year round position. 100% employer paid life, long term disability and AD & D insurance. Employer contribution to health savings account. 401(k) contribution (not a match). Free on‑site parking.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Field Carpentry (100%)
  • Prepare interiors and exteriors for preservation jobs.
  • Perform carpentry repairs at Preservation Properties and museums including – but not limited to – siding, fences, railings, doors, water tables, corner boards, and windows.
  • Carry out carpentry replacements, dutchman repairs, and/or replications.
  • Resolve tenant work orders as assigned by the Preservation Crew Supervisor and/or Senior Field Carpenter.
  • Assist with the installation, removal, and repair of storm windows.
  • Contribute to vacancy turnovers, which may include – but is not limited to – clean up, minor interior painting, and other related duties.
  • Assist with general maintenance and repair at Preservation Properties and museums when needed.

General:

  • Contribute to NRF’s Trades Training Initiative as assigned by the Properties Care Manager or Director of Preservation.
  • Assist with snow removal as needed.
  • Participate in other preservation‑related educational programming, as assigned by the Properties Care Manager or Director of Preservation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Properties Care Manager and/or Director of Preservation.
  • Opportunity for participating in a rotating on‑call schedule with stipend.

Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years of experience in general carpentry.
  • Knowledge of rough framing and finish carpentry.
  • Skilled in the use of both hand and power tools and possess extensive awareness of the safe operation of all tools.
  • Basic knowledge of heavy equipment used in NRF’s mill (e.g., large table saw, thickness planer, radial arm saw, etc.).
  • Knowledge of workplace safety procedures and hazardous materials in order to prevent injuries and accidents and ensure compliance.
  • Ability to effectively communicate, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work independently and in team settings.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment with a strong attention to detail.
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility and dedication, including when interacting with NRF’s tenants and outside contacts.
  • Must possess basic carpentry hand tools and willingness to bring them to the job.
  • Must possess the ability to work in a variety of inclement weather conditions.
  • Must be able to work from extended heights using extension ladders, staging, and lifts.
  • Must have the ability to lift 50 lbs alone or in concert with others.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and vehicle for commuting to and from job sites.
  • Speak and take direction in English.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working on historic buildings and/or restoration carpentry.
  • Knowledge of Lead Renovation, Repair, and Painting protocols.
