Plan, organize, direct and implement district athletic activities, including recommending the purchase and rental of equipment and facilities. Coach or assist coaches in various programs. Serve as the district point of contact for athletic program questions from schools, district, and state personnel. Provide a well-rounded athletic program for K-12 students of Newport Independent Schools and supervise district facility use by any athletic organization.

  • Determine appropriate action within clearly defined guidelines.
  • Present a positive image of the district to parents and convey genuine concern for each student’s education, growth and development.
  • Establish friendly and cooperative partnerships between home and school.
  • Work to develop a positive public relationship between the district and the community.
  • Carry out assignments in a timely manner without undue checking.
  • React positively to directives.
  • Cooperate with the superintendent, district administrators, principals and staff.
  • Maintain confidentiality of each student’s educational records, verbally and in writing.
  • Maintain and improve professional competence.
  • Take necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
  • Understand, model and implement the district athletic handbook for all students and colleagues.
  • Adhere to Newport Board of Education Policies and procedures, including Kentucky Redbook guidelines.
  • Adhere to KY High School Athletic Association Procedures, including required coach trainings and Title IV compliance.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Organize and administer the overall program of extracurricular athletics for the district.
  • Lead the selection, assignment and evaluation of athletic coaches and staff.
  • Foster good school–community relations and keep the community informed and engaged.
  • Assist head coaches in organization and scheduling of all interscholastic events.
  • Ensure transportation for athletic contest participants.
  • Hire officials, game workers and security as required; assume responsibility for proper game management of home games.
  • Develop and implement rules and regulations governing extracurricular activities in elementary and secondary schools.
  • Verify athletes’ eligibility and ensure they meet physical and academic requirements.
  • Coordinate with the district finance officer to prepare and administer the athletic program budget.
  • Ensure supply of appropriate materials, uniforms and equipment for athletic programs.
  • Supervise cleaning, storage and care of all athletic equipment.
  • Supervise all ticket sales and fund-raising events, and account for monies.
  • Arrange visiting teams’ needs and use of non-school fields and facilities.
  • Oversee fairness of practice schedules relative to field and gymnasium availability.
  • Provide or arrange physical examination of all athletes before each season.
  • Administer the insurance program covering school athletes and process reports and claims.
  • Maintain records of varsity contest results and award winners, including dates and award types.
  • Plan and supervise an annual recognition program for school athletes.
  • Promote academic achievement during athletes’ high school careers; serve as liaison for post-secondary scholarships and incentives.
  • Collect consent forms for drug testing prior to each season’s practices.
  • Provide the district office with complete and accurate rosters of staff members.
  • Ensure all staff complete appropriate paperwork and background checks before duties.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the superintendent.

Physical Demands

  • Work performed while standing, sitting, and/or walking.
  • Require effective communication using speech, vision, and hearing.
  • Use hands for grasping and fine manipulation.
  • Require bending, squatting, crawling, climbing, and reaching.
  • Require lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling light weights up to approximately 20 pounds.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree; preferred degree in sports administration with coursework in business, finance, or physical education.
  • Three years of experience as a coach and/or athletic director preferred.
  • Knowledge of coaching techniques in multiple sports.
  • Strong leadership skills and highly organized.
  • Alternative qualifications acceptable if approved by the superintendent.
