Location: Beautiful coastal location, Isle of Wight

Hours: Full-time, Part-time, or whatever fits around the school run and travel timetable

Main duties of the job

  • The post-holder will make themselves available to undertake a variety of duties, including face to face consultations, telephone consultations and queries, visiting patients at home, checking and signing repeat prescriptions and dealing with queries, paperwork and correspondence in a timely fashion.
  • Making professional, autonomous decisions relating to presenting problems, whether self-referred or referred from other health care workers within the organisation.
  • Assessing the health care needs of patients with undifferentiated and undiagnosed problems.
  • Screening patients for disease risk factors and early signs of illness.
  • Developing care plans for health in consultation with patients and in line with current practice disease management protocols.
  • Providing counselling and health education.
  • Admitting or discharging patients and referring to other care providers as appropriate.
  • Recording clear and contemporaneous consultation notes to agreed standards.
  • Compiling and issuing computer-generated acute and repeat prescriptions (avoiding hand-written prescriptions whenever possible).
  • Prescribing in accordance with the practice prescribing formulary (or generically) whenever this is clinically appropriate.
  • The post-holder will undertake all the normal duties and responsibilities associated with a GP working within primary care.

Job responsibilities

  • Recognise and work within own competence and professional code of conduct, to contribute to clinical governance activities / clinical audit to ensure continual improvement of service delivery.
  • Contribute to complaints responses / reviews, significant event, peer review and other shared learning activities.
  • Provide services to the practice's patient population to the highest possible standard i.e. QOF.
  • Take action if standards are not met (self or others).
  • Work to agreed standards, monitor and maintain the standard of care offered.
  • Effectively manage own time, workload and resources.
  • Utilise the audit cycle as a means of evaluating the quality of the work of self and the team, implementing improvements where required.
  • In partnership with other clinical teams, collaborate on improving the quality of health care responding to local and national policies and initiatives as appropriate.
  • Evaluate patients' response to health care provision and the effectiveness of care.
  • Support and participate in shared learning across the practice and wider organisation.

Person Specification

  • Qualifications: Qualified GP
  • Experience: Experience of delivering patient care in a primary care, urgent or community setting. In depth therapeutic and clinical knowledge and understanding of the principles of evidence-based healthcare. Experience of multi-disciplinary working. Clear understanding of professional responsibility and accountability. Knowledge of current clinical evidence based practice.
  • Skills and Personal Qualities: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including emotional intelligence to deal effectively with complex and sensitive patient information, distressed or aggressive patients, or those with an impaired level of understanding. Ability to liaise and communicate effectively with all members of the multi-disciplinary team and other services. Ability to perform holistic assessment, critically analyse complex patient information or situations. Ability to critically analyse patient information or situations and make clinical judgements and decisions as to the best course of action. Effective time management (Planning & Organising). Ability to work as a team member and autonomously. Good interpersonal skills. Skilled in clinical history taking. Excellent attention to detail. Planning and organising. Flexible and cooperative.
