Newport City Council's Environment and Public Protection service area brings together various services such as waste and cleansing, grounds, community protection, parks and recreation, cemetery and crematorium, climate change, biodiversity and regulatory services. In the Cleansing discipline, we focus on providing a first class street cleansing service and we are currently digitalising and improving the service. This is an exciting time to join the Waste and Cleansing Services team.

We are looking for street cleansing operatives on our new weekend shift: Saturday – Monday 5:00 – 18:00 (36 hour contract) including bank holiday working.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Carry out routine street cleansing tasks including litter picking, sweeping, bin emptying, operating power tools, treating and removal of weeds and debris.
  • Support the clearance of fly tipping, leaves, graffiti, and spillages.
  • Work to daily routes and service schedules to maintain high standards across the city.
  • Use manual and small mechanical equipment (litter pickers, blowers, sprayers, jet wash, barrows, etc.).
  • Work safely near traffic, in public spaces and in all weather conditions.
  • Report issues such as fly tipping, damaged bins, graffiti, or blocked drains.
  • Assist with basic traffic management (cones/signage) when required.
  • Maintain equipment in clean, safe condition and report defects promptly.
  • Support reactive cleansing during events, adverse weather or emergency situations.
  • Provide friendly, helpful service to members of the public and be an ambassador for the Council.

You will work closely with other areas within Waste and Cleansing and other NCC disciplines such as grounds & highways and in collaborations with internal and external stakeholders across the City.

Who We're Looking For:

  • We are looking for an enthusiastic and confident person, candidates with previous or current knowledge and experience in a similar position who take pride in their work.
  • Reliable, physically fit and comfortable working outdoors year round.
  • Experience in cleansing, grounds, waste, construction, or similar manual work (desirable but not essential).
  • Works well as part of a team and follows instructions clearly.
  • Takes pride in delivering a clean and safe environment for the community.
  • Understands the importance of health & safety (training provided).
  • Punctual, adaptable and has a positive, proactive attitude.
