Are you somebody who wants to make a difference to the lives of disabled children and young people? Do you want to support them and watch them grow through developing independent living skills? Newport City Council's Disabled Children's Team is currently recruiting a small team of sessional workers on a fixed term contract. We are seeking enthusiastic individuals with proven experience in supporting children with disabilities across a range of settings, including schools, play schemes, clubs, or in personal assistant roles. This is a rewarding opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of children and young people by contributing to inclusive, engaging, and supportive group activities.
As a sessional worker, you will work closely with the Team's Youth Engagement Officer to design and deliver a diverse range of activities that focus on promoting independent living skills and personal growth for disabled children and young people.
There will be two options available:
- Option 1: Support disabled children with a range of fixed after school activities during school term-time (up to 15 hours per week). We are looking for people who can commit to a regular work pattern throughout the year.
- Option 2: Support our holiday program which requires some flexibility but will primarily be 6 or 7 hours a day (up to 25 hours per week), which we hope to run in every school holiday throughout the year.
The team is based at Serennu Children's Centre, a purpose-built facility opened in April 2011; however, activities may be based in the wider community, at a variety of locations and venues. The role will involve meeting the physical, emotional, and care needs of individuals, and requires a strong commitment to inclusive, non-restrictive practices that empower disabled children and young people to thrive in a safe and supportive environment.
The sessional staff will be jointly responsible for setting up and clearing of activities, care and maintenance of equipment, completion of case recordings, and undertaking appropriate training around confidentiality, child protection, non-restrictive practices, and meeting the care needs of disabled children, including personal care.
The post holders will be well supported and the post will provide excellent opportunities for personal development and experience. You will join a newly established team within the Disabled Children's Team to collectively develop a Preventative array of services that can make a difference to the people we support.
This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act and is subject to a successful Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.
