Newport City Council is offering an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Solicitor to join our Planning and Land team.As a city with bold ambitions for growth and regeneration, Newport provides a dynamic environment for legal professionals. In this role, you’ll work on high-impact projects that shape local communities—bringing both challenge and reward. You’ll manage competing priorities in a fast-paced setting, supported by a collaborative team that values development and innovation.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage a varied caseload of planning, highways, rights of way, and commercial property matters.
- Provide clear, timely legal advice to Council services, committees (including Planning Committee), and partner organisations.
- Represent the Council at Planning Inquiries and other relevant proceedings.
- Draft and negotiate legal documents with precision and professionalism.
Attend Council and committee meetings, offering expert legal support as needed.
We are seeking an enthusiastic individual with:
- A qualification as a solicitor, barrister, or Fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives qualified to practice in England and Wales.
- Practical knowledge and understanding of planning law, commercial property law, and highways law.
- Demonstrable experience in drafting legal agreements, statutory notices, and formal orders with accuracy and attention to detail.
