As a NewOrbit Physicist, you’ll be part of a dynamic and innovative team working and researching on advanced systems for our satellite with air-breathing electric propulsion technology.
NewOrbit is a space startup with a mission to engineer the lowest orbiting satellites on Earth. We have developed an air-breathing propulsion system that enables operations at Ultra-Low Earth Orbits (ULEO). This allows our satellites to fly at ~200km in altitude, 3x lower than conventional Low Earth Orbit (LEO). At this ultra low altitude, it will be possible to provide 9-10x better image quality for Earth observation purposes, improved direct-to-phone internet capacity, among other benefits. All in a self-cleaning and sustainable orbit, where space debris is mitigated naturally, with passive de-orbits occurring within ~1 month.

Responsibilities:
Note that this role will be rotational. You’ll be expected to contribute across engineering disciplines such as mechanical, aerospace and electronics as well.
- Conduct research on the behavior of gases in rarefied conditions found in ultra-low Earth orbit (ULEO), applying principles of kinetic theory and statistical mechanics to model gas flow and interactions with satellite surfaces.
- Assist in developing computational models to simulate the dynamics of rarefied gases interacting with satellite components, gaining experience with techniques such as Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC).
- Support the design and execution of experiments to validate theoretical models, using laboratory setups like vacuum chambers to replicate ULEO conditions.
- Investigate gas-surface interactions within the propulsion system , contributing to improvements in material selection and surface design for optimal performance.
- Assist in analyzing thermal effects of rarefied gas interactions within the propulsion system, working with engineers to enhance thermal management and prevent system degradation.
- Collaborate closely with mechanical, aerospace, and electronics engineers, providing experimental support to integrate propulsion systems into the broader satellite platform.
- Hands-on laboratory work , including the setup, operation, testing, and analysis of experimental apparatus related to our satellite and propulsion system.
Fundamental Requirements:
- Educational Background: Top grades with a degree in Physics
- Physics R&D Background: Experience in university research or personal projects related to aerospace topics
- Good to have: Plasma research experience
- Hands-On Experience: Practical experience in lab work and testing is essential
