Ophthalmic Nurse Admissions & Discharge

We are looking for an Ophthalmic Nurse to join our Cheshire Oaks site. This role will be 40 hours over 5 days per week, including weekends on a rota basis where required. Our Ophthalmic Nurses ensure a safe and efficient service, supporting outpatients through their clinical and theatre journeys. You will manage the pre‑operative patient process by performing a range of clinical assessments and getting patients ready for surgery. The thought of eye surgery can be a daunting prospect for patients just before going into theatre, so our Ophthalmic Nurses need to be empathetic, friendly and able to put patients at ease and help them feel comfortable while they are being prepared.

You’ll care for our post‑operative patients by helping them relax while you explain the next steps and medication details, clearly outlining what they can expect and any possible side effects. Our services are busy; we can typically see 18‑22 patients a day in our high‑volume cataract surgery provision, so you’ll thrive working in an efficient and fast‑paced environment. You can also be supporting the consultant in outpatient clinics, undertaking diagnostic testing as required. You’ll maintain accurate patient records and, in all you do, you’ll ensure the highest standards are met in terms of patient safety, confidentiality, clinical compliance and hygiene levels.

What skills and experience do I need

• You must be a fully qualified Registered Nurse with a current NMC registration in the UK.
• Experience in ophthalmic care, particularly in admission and discharge processes, is highly desirable.
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and a friendly professional approach when working with colleagues and caring for patients.
• Working knowledge of Biometry/Corneal Topography/OCT/FFA/IOP and skills conducting diagnostic assessments in Visual Acuity/IOP checks (Tonopen/Goldman Tonometer), Visual Fields/Pachymetry/Slit Lamp.
• Previous hospital eye service or private eye clinic experience.
• Knowledge of clinical practice and awareness of current developments in optometry.
• Capability of working in a fast‑paced, high‑volume clinical setting.
• Experience in training and coaching others.
• Desire for and commitment to continuous professional development.
• Competent user of computer systems and programmes.
• Good team player, happy to jump in and support others when required.
