Newmedica are one of the leading providers of NHS ophthalmology services in England, delivering outpatient appointments, diagnostic testing and eye surgery. We aim to change lives through better sight and eye health. We care for thousands of NHS and private patients each year in our specialist eye clinics across the country and have been certified as a Great Place to Work for the third year running.

We are looking for a new Clinic Assistant to join our Whiteley site. The role is 37.5 hours per week over four days, including weekends on a rota basis. Clinic Assistants are the face of Newmedica and are often the first people patients interact with during clinic visits. A welcoming, friendly and empathetic approach is essential.

This is a busy role – you will see a number of patients each day, taking them through a range of diagnostic tests. The results will be passed to a senior clinician to determine whether surgery or further treatment is required. You will use a variety of equipment and systems, so a comfort with technology and systems is important.

Patients may find the idea of eye surgery daunting. Clinic Assistants must put patients at ease and possess strong communication skills to explain the purpose of the different tests, ensuring patients understand their treatment. The Clinic Assistant role offers a platform to progress your clinical skills or take the first step on a clinical career path. Newmedica is committed to the growth and development of all colleagues, and the role can lead to a career in diagnostic (clinic) or theatre teams.

Key skills and experience

  • Previous experience working with patients or in a customer‑facing role
  • Knowledge of eye physiology and treatment or a keen interest in building knowledge in this area
  • Competent user of Office 365 programmes and comfortable working with new systems such as patient record or diagnostic programmes
  • Excellent grasp of the English language, both verbally and in written format
  • Experience handling a variety of data (e.g. patient records, GP and patient correspondence, diagnostic test results)
  • Good team player, willing to support others when required
